5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, Entertaining & Beautiful Observations On Childhood
Sara Midda reveals her keen sense of observation and sensitivity as she turns her attention to the topic of childhood. Her wonderful illustrations remind us of how mysterious, confusing, wonderful and painful the world of children can be, and how often children are misunderstood. It will probably help parents and grown-ups understand their children (by reminding them of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Tiny font makes this difficult to enjoy
British artist Sara Midda has talent, however this reproduction of her work falters. The illustrations remind me of Lane Smith's but they are t-i-n-y here. And forget about trying to read the text! From comments on her other works (Sara Midda's South of France: A Sketchbook and In and Out of the Garden), this seems to be a common complaint. Yet the margins are...

Sara Midda reveals her keen sense of observation and sensitivity as she turns her attention to the topic of childhood. Her wonderful illustrations remind us of how mysterious, confusing, wonderful and painful the world of children can be, and how often children are misunderstood. It will probably help parents and grown-ups understand their children (by reminding them of what it was like to be a child) more than any self-help book.

I adore Midda's work and bought this sight unseen. Very clever and charming, but a bit slight in pages. Wonderful insights on the relationships between adults and children. Inspiring artwork.

This book was quite entertaining. There were many things that I could relate to. I really like Sara's watercolors and figure representations.
Would be a novel gift for someone.

5.0 out of 5 stars for everyone, July 28, 2006

Delightful. Brings a smile to your face. Reminds you not to take things too seriously. Illustrations are miniature works of art.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tiny font makes this difficult to enjoy, October 5, 2010
This review is from: Growing up and Other Vices (Hardcover)
British artist Sara Midda has talent, however this reproduction of her work falters. The illustrations remind me of Lane Smith's but they are t-i-n-y here. And forget about trying to read the text! From comments on her other works (Sara Midda's South of France: A Sketchbook and In and Out of the Garden), this seems to be a common complaint. Yet the margins are large...bizarre. I wonder if this is Workman's issue (they have published all three) or simply a design quirk (are they meant to be miniatures?). Either way, the solution would appear to involve viewing her work in a gallery or else buying a microscope. As I am unable or unwilling to do either, this edgy but perceptive book about childhood reminiscences will unfortunately go back on the shelf and probably stay there.
