It's 1939 in Glasgow, and Mirrin Stewart is all set to begin her new job as a teacher. Not so long ago, she lost her mother to cancer, and as she spends more time with her father, she realizes that he is becoming forgetful and difficult. They're all each other has, except for some relatives in the country, whom they visit. While her father enjoys himself, Mirrin meets Jack. He's very confident and forward, and Mirrin, who has led a sheltered life, is simultaneously attracted and confused. Back home, Mirrin tries to prepare herself and her father for her absence when she begins her new job across town, but, increasingly agitated, he falls down the stairs to his death. Now alone in the world, Mirrin falls for Jaime, but he is preoccupied with the war and soon joins the RAF. Jack is still in the picture, but once again Mirrin's world is about to fall apart. How she deals with change--and how she changes--makes this a stirring story.
