An excellent book for all growers, for show or not.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Growing to Show: How to Grow Prize Winning African Violets (Paperback)
As a grower of African Violets for many years, I find this book to be perhaps the most informative, particularly for the actual growing of the plants, in print. Virtually every aspect of growing perfect plants is discussed in a straight-forward format. Opinionated only by factual insight, no words are wasted. Technical necessities are discussed at a level for most everyone to easily comprehend and put to use. Considered THE BOOK in many grower circles, and deservedly so by virtue of the success that can be achieved by following the authors advice.

At Last, an African Violet Book for Everyone,
By Don Blankenship (The Ozarks) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing to Show: How to Grow Prize Winning African Violets (Paperback)
The title of this book my be a bit misleading. While it does indeed cover almost every aspect of raising African Violets for show, it is much, much more. If you buy only one book addressing the raising of these wonderful plants, buy this one. The book is written in a straight forward manner, presenting many details, without being over whelming. Technical terms (jargon) are kept to a minimum. You do not need a degree in horticulture to understand the points the author is making. The book is quite suitable for both beginner and advanced grower alike. Illustrations are simple but very adequate and understandable as is the author's style. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the raising of African Violets! I wish there were more books on the market like this one.

This book is great, but please read before you purchase!,
This review is from: Growing to Show: How to Grow Prize Winning African Violets (Paperback)
Hi there. This book is great. I have had violets since I was a little girl and am now much, much older and still have a violet collection stemming (pardon the pun) from miniature violets, trailing to large violet plants. This book is great and I highly recommend. But please do your research before you purchase a used book from a used book seller. You can buy this book for $16.00 from [...] brand new and at [...] (American Violet Society website for 16.00--brand new) and on this amazon marketplace used book website, the price ranges from $27 to $100. I hate to bash this website as I have found very good deals and have made many purchases, especially books and music, but these prices are outrageous and reflects unconscientious (and that is putting it as nicely as I can) salespeople intending to benefit greatly from unsuspecting buyers. Please always either google books you are interested in or try websites that reflect the interest in the purchase you are making. There is also a violet magazine you can purchase at these 2 websites. I have not researched that here. But please take your time. Shame on these sellers for trying to scam innocent buyers!

I was told about this text by a member of the local African Violet society. I mentioned that I wanted a book for beginners.
This book is very thorough but geared toward the advanced or experienced grower. For this reason, I found it somewhat overwhelming. I'm looking for another book for a beginner! |
