A Pittsburger's View,

This review is from: Growing Up with Clemente (Paperback)
If you buy this book thinking you are getting a book about baseball in general and Clemente and the Pirates in particular, you will be highly disappointed. If however, you grew up in Pittsburgh in general and the South Side in particular, as I did, you will love this book. Having graduated from South High, as did Mr. Peterson, albeit 20 years before me, it was amazing to read that not much had changed in the 2 decades between, and neither had the South Sides of our youth. This is a book that details the South Side of the '40's and the coming of age of a young boy. The neighborhoods, the racial tension of the era, the summer swims and the endless baseball games on any field we could find, were all part of growing up on the South Side of not only Pittsburgh, but any large city in America. A really good read whether you are from Pittsburgh or Chicago, "Growing Up With Clemente" will take you back to the days of your youth

This is an ideal read for anyone that was raised in Pittsburgh in the 50's 60's. Also a great coming of age book for anyone that has gone from a boy to a man. It is right on target as a Pittsburhgers must read. Jack Wolf

Honestly haven't read this yet. I'm trusting it will be outstanding based on having grown up on the Southside about 5 years behind "Pete". So I was 14 through 20 watching Clemente before joining the Air Force during Vietnam.Frankly, this will just sit on the shelf for a couple years next to my pictures of Mazeroski, Virdon, and the rest of the 1960 Buccos. |
