Gr 3-6-In contrast to Raymond Bial's "Home" series (Houghton), which builds around the unique homes of different American cultures, including Cajun Home (Houghton, 1998), this series describes the cultures through the eyes of real children, following them throughout their daily lives. The format is casual, without chapters, and the text flows informatively from one subject to the next as three modern youngsters and their families are highlighted. Framed boxes scattered throughout give historical information and explanations, but they often break the narrative flow-a minor annoyance. The text is accurate and lively and will certainly engage children's interest. A short list for further information includes recordings of Cajun music. All in all, the book presents an interesting and well-balanced picture of life today, as well as a good look at the past. The accompanying color photographs visually involve readers in the subjects' lives. A solid addition to the growing body of literature on the Cajuns.-Judith Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
