Editorial Reviews

Review

"The beauty of Growing Up Gronk is that you never really have to grow up at all. A fascinating look inside a larger-than-life football family. Enjoy the romp of Growing Up Gronk." -- Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe columnist and bestselling author (with Terry Francona) of Francona: the Red Sox Years

"If football is the ultimate American sport, it follows that the Gronkowskis are the ultimate American family. That equation isn’t based merely on their talents—which are extraordinary enough. No, it’s their unbridled exuberance and irreverence that sets them apart. From Gordie Senior on down, they are the Peter Pans of football, men-children who refuse to take themselves or the game too seriously. Anyone who’s spent time around the Brothers Gronkowski will surely agree that Growing Up Gronk captures them in full." -- Jeremy Schaap, ESPN commentator and bestselling author of Cinderella Man and Triumph

They were born, they grew up. Their father made some nice deals on exercise equipment. They started to exercise in eighth grade, as a family tradition -- they played sports and then football, they got hurt. They had fun.

Although there are some interesting tidbits scattered throughout this book -- and I wish my mother had put a freezer full of food stocked for me and Sis when we were in the middle of our baseball practice/growth spurt years -- I found the book to be pleasantly anecdotal, but not inspirational. It's nice to know "how they did it" but it doesn't give much of a message other than -- this is a nice, solid family -- this is how they lived, grew up, played sports.

I bought this for my nephews birthday and he loved it. But it is definitely a book for children and not adults. I read a quote attributed to Wes Welker where he joked that he though it was written in crayon but it does seem like a rush job with not much time or effort put into it.

I received this book from the Vine program and more than likely I would never have purchased the book. It seems more targeted fro children to read. The print though is large, the wording not that difficult and a fast and easy book to read in a short time. This is somewhat the "all American" story of a family that loved sports, that worked hard and overcame setbacks as they worked toward their goals. The book will give you a picture of how the family was raining the boys, how the family got by of a few hundred dollars a week for food when everyone was at home.

This is just a nice little personal book that gives the reader the "rest of the story" and is light and of little real substance. It is just a little fun reading away from those books that contains lot of drama and intrigue,. You won't find that in this book.. This book is not a breaking story worthy of a news clip, but rather a lazy , short, little story about one's family , their trials and tribulations. Read it only if you have nothing else to do for the moment.

I liked the great insight into the Gronkowski family, their upbringing, the process of learning competitive sports, and the bond and humble nature of all the brothers. A must read for anybody thinking not only about competitive sports but life lessons in any walk of life and what it takes to succeed.

If I was a huge Rob Gronkowski fan, I might have enjoyed this book. Mind you, I didn't say Patriots fan, since there is very little here either about the Patriots or derived from direct quotes from anyone associated with the Patriots organization. I initially ordered this book since I have a high school athlete and wanted to get some tips on diet, training and the college recruitment process. I didn't get much of that info, but I did get quite a bit of hero worship and fluff. The amount of ego gratification in this book diminished my interest on account of the fact that it was supposedly written by the Gronkowski family with the assistance of Jeff Shober. On the first page of the introduction, Gordon Gronkowski, the family patriarch, is described as having, "hands the size of salad plates, and biceps like snow tires." Come on man!
The book is full of quotes like, "He blossomed into the person he became." Don't we all? It's also full of references to unnamed people who actually contributed in some way to the success of individual members of the family like the quarterback who threw for Chris and Rob on their private pro day workouts. It sounds like he did a great job, but the only thing I know about him is that he played QB for Hawaii. Would it have been that hard to give him a little recognition by telling readers his name?
Granted, it is a wonderful accomplishment to have 3 kids nominally playing in the NFL at the same time and Rob may one day be a Hall of Famer, but right now he's an injury prone player who has had a couple of good seasons and hasn't really grown up. It sounds like all of the Gronkowski family have terrible back problems, so I'm not using many of the training tips for my son.
If you are looking for a good book on a proven athlete, I would suggest GO LONG, by Jerry Rice. There are some good life lessons there.

Heartwarming story about the whole family and their approach to life. There are no shortcuts to having good genes and having a strong work ethic and practice , practice , practice.

When I started to read the book I was enjoying the childhood stories etc but as I went on it kind of felt like a promotion piece. I was glad I read it though. It gave an interesting perspective on an athletic family's life and how important connections are and how hard it is to make it in the professional world if you don't have those connections or are injured. It definitely provides me with conversation topics.
