Book Description

It has been proved time and time again that the development of children's literacy is a major factor in their future success. In that regard, those who teach or intend to teach our youth will most certainly find Growing Up with Literature one of the most important texts they ever study. The student will find practical, invaluable information about children's books and how and why these books are so important for literacy development. They will be better prepared to develop children's early literacy capabilities through the knowledge gained on planning reading sessions; using technology to enhance multiple literacies; storytelling; using stories to deal with problems (bibliotherapy); integrating picture books into the rest of the curriculum; and using puppets and theater as extensions. The text is a tremendous resource for selecting appropriate pieces of literature as it features a comprehensive list of the best children's picture books published in the last half-century, with an emphasis on the most up-to-date publications. Learn the role each genre of literature plays in literacy development, including fiction, nonfiction, fables, fairy tales, poetry, biographies, historical fiction, folk tales and ABC and counting books. The author draws on his many years as an educator to detail planning strategies that will ensure success, as well as integration strategies that make for an easy fit with any curriculum.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This text presents a novel approach to viewing language and literacy development in young children that I have not seen in other texts on children's literature. …[I]t bridges the gap between children's literature and language and literacy in a way that makes sense to my students. It is just the kind of instructional material I have been looking for." -Donna Rafanello, M.Ed., Long Beach City College, Long Beach, CA

"I would strongly recommend this book for courses for the associate degree student because of its content, approach, readability and general appeal." - Gail E. Wentworth, Ed.D., State University of New York Cobleskill College, Cobleskill, NY

"The author is clearly very up to date on children's literature. ... I purchase dozens of children's books a year and know many of the titles and authors discussed. The books and authors mentioned are top of the line as well as web sites." -John A. Sutterby, University of Texas at Brownsville, Brownsville, TX --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Growing Up With Literature (Paperback)
This book was required book for one of my college classes, and after purchasing it, I found it to be a valuable tool, not only in the classroom, but at my own home as well. There are so many great books referenced in the text and many ways are explored in the teaching of the books. A definite tool for the early and elementary educator. Or just a parent who needs references. This book is a keeper!!
