Editorial Reviews

Review

As a new working mom, I struggle to find the time to quilt as often as I would like to. This book addresses just that issue. Allison Harris understands what it’s like to have the creative bug for crafting and quilting, and she gives some great advice: from giving your kids scraps of fabric to glue on a cut-out cardboard letter, to being realistic and limiting yourself to two projects: one small “faster” project, and one more which you might have started a while ago. That way you’ll most likely finish the projects that you start! I also really love the projects she’s put together for this book because they mix a variety of skill levels and she features quite a few modern designs that I’m attracted to. (connectingthreads.com, June 2013)

This is a very beginner-friendly book written by a busy mum, who shares tips on how to find time for quilting when you have a few littlies running (or crawling) around. There is a lot of easy-to-follow information on quilting basics and the projects (12 quilts, a pillow and a quillow) are sweet and simple. This book would make a perfect present for a young mum who wants to make her first quilt but is not sure how to start.
(Down Under Quilts Magazine, June 2013)

Allison Harris presents 16 patchwork projects to make for children in the 'modern quilt' style of large patches, lots of solid fabrics and straightforward stitching. The book has been designed specifically for busy mums (and grandmothers, aunts and friends) who want to make quilts for young children that will be snuggled with, dragged around, made into forts and loved until they are worn and thin. The projects are beginner friendly—indeed, Allison makes the point that if you're only just starting out on your quiltmaking journey, these quilts are ideal, as "kids don't care if you make a mistake." Almost half of the projects include instructions for making the quilt in crib and twin, as well as 'baby' size. There are also chapters on quiltmaking basic. Each quilt is shown in a flat shot as well as in one or more additional photographs, and coloured diagrams are provided to assist with cutting and assembly. (Australian Homespun Magazine, July 2013)

There are some really cute patterns in this book and as with all Stash Books, it has great illustrations for the patterns to help you along the way and awesome instructions too. (www.pleasant-home.com, 8/12/13)

Growing Up Modern: 16 Quilt Projects for Babies & Kids is for beginners and expert sewers alike who will enjoy a solid collection of kid-oriented quilts for quilts or small children alike. Seven of the patterns adapt of crib and twin-bed-sized quilts alike, with step—by—step instructions and color photos throughout simplifying the process of producing quilts especially tailored for young people. From time-saving quilting tips for those with kids to keys on making quilts that are welcomed, this is a lovely project book for all quilter levels. (The Needlecraft Shelf, 9/6/13)

Whether you're an experienced quilter or a new kid on the quilt block, this book has something to offer for any of the young children in your life. Designed with busy moms in mind, this book has 16 quick and easy projects, 7 of which can be easily adapted from crib and twin sizes. If you're looking for something different, you can try patterns for a quillow and a reader pillow, which has a pocket for storing your child's favorite book. Filled with helpful diagrams, charts, and other visuals, this book also provides basic, beginner-friendly instructions for piecing a quilt top, layering, and finishing a quilt. And if you're a mom, there's a bonus—a short-but-sweet section with realistic advice on finding the time to quilt when you have young kids at home. And we all know that may be the hardest part of all! (International Quilt Festival - Quilt Scene, 10/1/13)

This book has so many great quilt patterns geared for babies and kids...but they're fresh and modern enough to last into adulthood.

I had the good fortune of jumping to the front of the line so to speak by getting the Kindle version of this book and I am so happy I did! Allison Harris does such a wonderful job of presenting information clearly for beginners while she gives tips to mommies looking to cobble together some time to quilt on how to do just that (she speaks from experience being a Mom herself!), and she presents gorgeous quilts and a few other projects that are actually achievable for those of us running around after our munchkins. I follow her blog religiously because I love how she manages to make things of such beauty while caring for kids. This book is great if you are looking for more modern quilt designs, I always find her patterns to be unfussy but interesting to the eye and beautiful and color saturated. This book is awesome, I am already thumbing through my stash of fabric looking to make one of her quilts for my four month old!

This book has so many great quilt patterns geared for babies and kids...but they're fresh and modern enough to last into adulthood. The instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow. And, the fabric choices for the quilts in the book are so fun and fresh...very inspiring! This is definitely a favorite quilting book of mine!

Sometimes, I really want an easy, satisfying project- and I was so thrilled to see that all of the projects included in the book are just the ticket! I've made one from the book already and it turned out so beautiful, and all in two afternoon nap sessions! The projects are so good for beginners too, there are cutting instructions, sewing tips, and detailed piecing instructions. I can't wait to make all of the projects- 16 patterns in one great book is a STEAL in the pattern purchasing world. Some of the projects are perfect for my stash busting!

Although I have not made each of these yet, I like the designs of these quilts because they are simple and the quilts go together very quickly, but the most wonderful thing is that the quilts look fantastic. The instructions are clear and accurate. I appreciate that. I usually make traditional quilts, but wanted some inspiration for more modern designs. This is a wonderful book for that.

Love this little book! Love it! I have been reading, and waiting to find time to try it 'out'. each pattern uses bright kid friendly colors, a lot of white, just the way I love to quilt. the patterns themselves appear easy and in 3 different sizes-baby, crib and twin. And there are close-ups of the quilt itself, so you can see what quilting pattern the author used.
