GROWING UP WITH MONSTERS is a wonderful little book written by one of the last links to the great Silent Film Era. Carla Laemmle is the niece of Universal Studios founder, Carl Laemmle.
Ms. Laemmle uses rhyming prose, aided with excellent pen and ink illustrations, to tell the story of how Universal came to excel at producing horror movies, which are now Classics.
Not only was Ms. Laemmle just there at the time, she spoke the first line in DRACULA (which is the title for her autobiography).
After she tells her story in words, a large slice of Hollywood history is served up via her personal photographs, including two very rare photographs of her with her friend, Mary Philbin (who starred with Lon Chaney in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA).
I have looked through this book several times, and each time find something new; either in the illustrations or in the photographs.
I am very pleased that Ms. Laemmle took the time to document her memories of the Silent Film Era, and very pleased to add this book to my library.

This is one of the most-fun books I've read in years. It's very short, but is packed full of charming memories, terrific illustrations (by Jack Davis and Hermann Mejia), and photos that include very rare posters of movies made during the silent-film era and beyond. Miss Laemmle writes this narrative in such a charming way that we know she must be a beloved friend to everyone whose path in life crosses hers.

Carla Laemmle.....what monster movie fan wouldn't want to have met her? I think it's great that this work was published and that fans can sort of meet Carla (a little bit) through this book. This book contains a few ages of poetry, a short introduction and a bunch of photos of posters and stills from her movies. But at less than 50 pages it's not worth $15.
