How refreshing to read a book about the Black middle class that shows definitively how many of our ancestral families were consciously aware of their circumstances, had a plan or vision to succeed and were able to act upon it. Far too often, the black community are written about and described in extremes. Families like Ms. Abdur-Raheem's are not written about enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this family, their management of business, the children (it takes a village) and of how both genders/all members adults and children had a role to play and worked hard to make that situation work as new family members cycled into the business, got on their feet and cycled out. I look forward to reading more historical or fictional work by Ms. Abdur-Raheem.

I believe that Ms. Abdur-Raheem's family success model is universal in nature and is still a relevant model that some of today's families can use. Well written, well researched, very thoughtful. A breath of fresh air.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read that offers a new perpective on A.C. of the past. The way that Ms. Raheem weaves in African American history into the story of her family business's history makes this a good and informative read. It's one of the stories about Atlantic City that you just don't hear about. I am so glad it is being told. I reccommend it.

I enjoyed reading about Atlantic City, especially the life of a family. Atlantic City is seen as a resort town and people always say "do people actually live there?" This book talks about the Washington family and has not only a educational but a humorous flavor!
