Book Description

April 1995 10 and upStory Library
The young people featured in these stories face many challenges--the rivalry and affection inspired by brothers and sisters, the problems created by too strict or too liberal parents, and what happens when the time comes to take on personal responsibility. Includes excerpts from such authors as Judy Blume, John Steinbeck, Paul Zindel and others.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-A collection of 28 stories from such well-known but diverse authors as Roald Dahl and Katherine Mansfield, John Steinbeck and Robert Cormier, loosely tied together by the theme of "growing up." The authors are from different time periods and countries, the characters run the gamut of proper little ladies and gentlemen to street-wise thieves, and the settings take readers from Victorian England to present-day America with many stops in between. Some of the selections were written as short stories while other are excerpts from longer works. In most instances the excerpts successfully stand alone, but some lack sufficient synopses or adequate historical background information. The stories are universal, however, regardless of time or place. Each one is illustrated with at least two line drawings. A good source for read-alouds, or for dipping into from time to time.
