More About the Author

First and foremost I have been married for 50 years. I have two children and five grandchildren, and am interested in my family, music, gardening, and embroidery.

I am a retired doctor/Consultant Psychiatrist. I qualified at Edinburgh University in 1962 and chose to work as a psychiatrist for 35 years. Since retiring I have had time to write and have published, so far (2012) three poetry books and a story for children, a poetry book for teenagers and five poetry books for adults. The sixth of this ilk for adults is almost ready for publication. The poems in my children's books were inspired by my children and grandchildren and each has a meaningful message.

I have written a past life book 'Beyond Mercy'. For this I did no research!I am told that it is a compelling read - I hope so!I found the process different and fascinating. For more information - read on.

My adult poetry books were inspired by her own life, which has had much suffering, pain and near death, and from the insights gained by the many years of psychotherapeutic work with my patients.

The poems are a distillation of that knowledge and experience, and are written with the intention of carrying on my work via this different medium. Many tell metaphorical 'stories'.

Knowledge and experience are dearly bought and should not be wasted or ignored.

The books for children and teenagers give gentle messages about the importance of such values as kindness, caring, sharing, endeavour, courage. I am deeply concerned that in the modern materialistic world, time spent with children and teenagers by parents is diminishing in many households and material possessions being substituted. Care and time with children is given to others who are paid to look after them. However kind the carers, material possessions will not make for happy fulfulled lives nor be a substitute for love. No one can guarantee health and happiness, but love and care from parents and mutual respect will at least pave the way forwards towards that goal.

My first novel/ story, Beyond Mercy, is a unique book. It is a long and challenging read about a past life in the 15th century with real links to the present day and the future. It is a book written without any research and it has been described as 'a compelling read'.I hope it proves to be so.

I am willing to state that, however strange this may seem, I believe that the 'middle' section of the book will be proven to be true in the next few years - maybe 2013? I cannot fortell the future so that date is possibly wrong. But that it will be 'proven to be true' is not wrong - of that I am certain.

I have made videos for teenagers and their parents which can be viewed either on or on under DrACoatesworth. I have made an informative and entertaining, interactive website for children at

I write articles for the web. Many of these articles are collected together into two books - 'thoughts' of a retired psychiatrist BOOK 1 and BOOK 2. The first has essays related to parenting of children, parenting of teenagers, and old age.T The second has essays related to religion and to more 'general' topics.

In USA, all my books are avaiable as paperbacks, printed and distributed in USA and as ebooks for Kindle and ALL from

All my books ARE available to be bought as paperbacks in UK ( where I live) and printed in UK( via or

I nearly died in 2006 but, instead of being allowed to die, and while deeply unconscious, I was told in another plane of existence, 'go back and write your books'. My body was not informed of that decision and though functioning, much damage had been done.Fortunately, my brain was spared. Consequently,I have had to go through the process of a slow, painful but gradual recovery.

However during those subsequent years and with my brain in tact, I have written and I continue to do so. I can only do my best and writing, which I love doing, has certainly kept me occupied. The interest and concentration required took me swiftly through days, weeks and months, times I I would rather not remember.

After several books had been printed, I spent many hours finding out about ebooks and how to convert my books ready for the amazing Kindle. Quite an exercise but totally rewarding when it all worked. Luckily I have always loved gadgets, so technology and computing became a natural progression of choice for me.

I hope that, in time, reading my books becomes part of many peoples' choices.
