Tatiana Maslany who won a special jury prize at Sundance for her role is quite simply a revelation! She owns this powerful and poignant family drama.
With it's brave look at what coming of age means in the 21st century and its frank discussions of sex, drugs, and gay sex this is as edgy as any of its american counterparts in the recent cinematic landscape!
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU SEE IT!

I watched this because Maslany's handling of Orphan Black is amazing. This earlier role does not yet measure up, but it does do a great job of exploring the human condition- the attempt to find function in a dysfunctional life where no one is unflawed or without hope. All of the characters own their roles and come together to tell the story well.

We wanted to see this because we liked Tatiana Maslany in Picture Day and Orphan Black. This is a small movie -- no big stars, special effects, or choreographed fight scenes -- all filmed in and around a wintery small town in Newfoundland. The themes are of course eternal: growing up, dealing with your parents and your children, discovering sex and love, friendship, loyalty and betrayal, the bonds of family. Maslany (at age 24) plays a young teenager quite convincingly, and deserves all the praise she has gotten for her acting. As does Shawn Doyle. Although there is sex between men, and ?attempted between a man and a girl, it is not explicit nor gratuitous and serves to advance the story and character development. We enjoyed this movie a lot.
