3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This book is really funny in parts. The twelve step approach was a neat spin on the whole idea of women's empowerment; there was a nice satiric bite to the concept. Overall, the book does have some serious moments, in with the humor. The insights just aren't deep enough to really stick with the reader. The book is very easily disposable. She doesn't really have alot to...

Since I became a Grrl Genius, nearly all my character flaws have mutated into charming evidence of my brilliance. ~Cathryn Michon

When a stand-up comic decides to put a pen to paper, we can only wonder how she will transfer the punch lines to print. Cathryn Michon not only succeeds, she pleases time after time. My sniggling (something between a snicker and a giggle), giggling and laughing loudly intermittently got me sent to my room because I was enjoying life too much while my husband stared aimlessly at the TV.

While many may say this is Bridget Jones at a Tony Robbins seminar, I have concluded this is much more Bridget Jones awakening to the words of Deepak Chopra. How could anyone miss: "your body's inherent wisdom." She is so yoga at times all while reminding me fondly of my best friend in high school who would have me rolling on the floor laughing as we composed fake letters about boys we had met at the beach. Just as we imagined these delicious and uninhibited revelations of fantasy, Cathryn Michon will at times embellish life so as to awaken a woman's wicked naughty side, all while having innocent fun.

Throughout this work-of-art-comedy-routine-in-print, you will be swept into a world of delicious wit, enlivening humor, total honesty, beyond total honesty and did I mention, TOTAL honesty? With a vocabulary to die for at times, Cathryn Michon weaves images of reality with precision.

Through her writing we come to understand her preoccupation with spontaneous doughnut fulfillment and observe her self-destructive patterns of behavior leading her to certain doom. It is in these moments when inspiration strikes and revelations are born of an awakened consciousness in the face of death itself. She also confronts societal ills with a high-class clarity and explores the synchronicity of life. Like Bridget, she learns life's best lessons through putting herself through the paces. She must experience life, sometimes fail and eventually rise to the occasion as a Grrl Genius. This makes her loveable, human and oh so funny.

The Grrl Genius Guide to Life is also filled with research on the subject of scientific discoveries. You will be amazed at what has been hidden by society and then revealed by the Grrl Genius herself.

In fact, you may shock your friends by revealing the details of Einstein's life or explaining how the cotton gin was actually invented by a woman. I learned how to live longer by relaxing in steam rooms and how to understand the deepest of life's mysteries through careful observations.

Sweep aside mundane realities, it is time to pull out the pink postits and cover your refrigerator with quotes like:

"Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Genius."

I loved reading about the cooking competition and at times the writing reads like sardonic slapstick with an evil twist. The author has one of those naughty minds always willing to devise creative revenge tactics for playful investigation only.

Various phrases and sentences also make for witty banter between friends in adapted versions. I said one line while talking on the phone and my friend thought it was brilliant. Do I feel like a genius after reading this book? Yes, and I felt very happy too because I love to find a humorous read that makes me laugh all the way through the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cathryn Michon Rocks!, July 16, 2001

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Life: A 12 Step Program on How to Become a Grrl Genius, According to Me! (Hardcover)
Like a great standup comedy routine, this book will make you LOL, even when it's pathetic. Not surprising, since the author IS a standup comedian, not to mention a very successful TV writer (Episodes for "Designing Women", "Sisters", & "China Beach" being among her notable works). The true stories of her hilarious life will strike many a chord with readers (The description of her midnight craving for "Krispy Kreme" doughnuts which becomes a frustrating New York City odyssey (is there any other kind?) is a riot. Ms. Michon achieves the impossible, going through a divorce with her sense of humor intact. The Lists, Quizzes, "Post-It's", and recipes (yes, recipes, even!) are extra fun. (I made the potato salad; it's to die for...and colorfully festive, as well.) Check it out! You'll want everyone you know to read it, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just fun and games, August 31, 2001

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Life: A 12 Step Program on How to Become a Grrl Genius, According to Me! (Hardcover)
When I first got my hands on this book I expected a sassy, "chicks rule!" comic romp - and got it, for the most part. What I hadn't anticipated was the touching honesty with which Cathryn describes the obstacles she had to overcome on the road to Grrl Geniushood, including a difficult divorce, bad temporary jobs, and being asked to interview for a job with her top off. Makes the reader feel that, if Cathryn can overcome and declare herself a Grrl Genius, well, I can too. Read this book - you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll find yourself wanting to sign up for a live salad-making competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Over the Top, December 30, 2004
Writer/Actress Cathryn Michon has written a funny novel that has a great message: Love yourself. Very visual in description, this book reads like a live performance. Other great love yourself girl's books you may enjoy: Gutsy Girls, the Gifted Girls Series, Queen B Superheroine, the mini-book Queen B's Guide to Being a Superheroine, and GirlTalk.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy one for all of your grrl genius pals, I did., June 28, 2003

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Life: A 12 Step Program on How to Become a Grrl Genius, According to Me! (Hardcover)
I haven't even gotten passed step 4 of the 12 steps and I've already ordered 10 more copies to give to all my grrl genius friends. I can't wait to pass this on to absolutly everyone I know, including the enlightened men in my life who will surely read it, as they are enlightened. Everytime I read something geniusy - like on every page - I want to tell someone about it. I laugh out loud and can't stand that my grrl genius friends haven't read this book and therefore cannot relish their geniusness as I'm learning how to do. I want to send all my grrl genius freinds quotes, but then I wouldn't have as much time to read and practice the 12 steps. This is why, in my geniusness, I've bought a copy for all my closest grrl genius friends.
I can honestly say that this is one of the funniest and most inspirational books I've ever picked up. I've never laughed out loude while reading, and this books cracks me up to the point of tears.
Don't pass up the opportunity for geniusness! Get this book by any means possible (some bookstores have it in-stock and discounted hint...bn), you will be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun than a vat of Krispy Krack!, May 22, 2003
I applaud Cathryn's genius and in her own genius, recognize my own! This book is silly and totally self indulgent, but what's wrong with that?

Grrls, pass this book along to anyone you know who could use a boost of self esteem. We're too hard on ourselves - we need to recognize our Genius!

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Life: A 12 Step Program on How to Become a Grrl Genius, According to Me! (Hardcover)
This is the funniest book ever, I just adore it. Not only does it make me laugh, which as we all know is good for you, I really started to believe in the power of Grrl Genius. Now, when I see a woman I hate or I'm really jealous of, I say to myself, hey, she's just a Grrl Genius like me, trying to fulfill her Genius to its greatest potential. And then, I make peace with her vicious and witchy overtures to the guy I'm crushing on, and move on. It's bizarre! But it's working, and I love it. Watch her show, too! It's on AMC, it's called Grrl Genius at the movies, and she shows and analyzes great retro films where the main character is a GG, like Marnie and Desperately Seeking Susan. Buy the book, live the life. I am a Grrl Genius, I am a Grrl Genius, I am a Grrl Genius...

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Life: A 12 Step Program on How to Become a Grrl Genius, According to Me! (Hardcover)
This book is hysterically funny. I read it on a plane and laughed out loud often enough to annoy everyone around me! The book is also very brave -- author Michon tells some very personal stories with honesty and without apology. After reading THE GRRL GENIUS GUIDE TO LIFE, I found myself clicking my heels and saying "I'm a Grrl Genius," -- and telling all of my grrl genius friends to read the book, too!
