Book Description

April 24, 2004
Who better to advise you on sex and relationships than a woman who has consistently failed at both? In this laugh out loud funny "self-help novel", self proclaimed genius and author Cathryn Michon provides a how not to guide for anyone tackling the daunting task of finding romance in today's world (or at the local fire station.)

Chock full of instructive relationship tips-such as the Pros and "Cons" of dating a man in prison-The Grrl Genius Guide to Sex (With Other People) is hilarious and right on the money both as an instructional guide and an endearingly romantic story about a woman and her four best friends who form The Grrl Genius Club. Armed with the information from Cathryn's Wild Sexual Animal Kingdom research and her "Love is Important but Chocolate is Essential" Chocolate Fun Facts, her posse of Grrl Geniuses struggle with singlehood, married life, sexual preferences, widowhood, and friendship. Cathryn's journey veers from a "nails-on-chalkboard-scratchingly-awful" divorce and the botched kidnapping of her own dog, to pretending to be a lesbian, seeing her old lingerie sold on her old front lawn by her ex-husband's girlfriend, losing her job, and a tragic industrial accident-level bikini wax. And through everything, Cathryn searches for the answer to the most important relationship question of all: why are all the best men gay?

If you've ever been tempted to have sex with another person, this is an essential read. If you've ever felt inadequate to a task or a failure at love or in any way anything less than a genius and you've sunk so low that even a new pair of cute shoes won't help, Cathryn Michon can show you the way to relationship happiness-all you have to do is learn from her very funny mistakes. However badly you think you've done anything, Cathryn has done it even worse, and reveals lessons learned in the wryly witty and devastatingly honest style that has made her the favorite of aspiring geniuses everywhere!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this rollicking romantic comedyâ€"cumâ€"self-help guide, Michon offers the disastrous escapades of her fictional alter ego, also named Cathryn Michon, as relationship lessons to learn from. "Think of this as... a 'how not to' book," she writes in the exclamation pointâ€"riddled introduction to this self-deprecating "self-help novel" that, despite its title, actually chronicles a quest for true love, not sex. Like the real Michon, the novel's protagonist is a successful stand-up comedian/writer. After self-proclaimed Grrl Genius Cathryn suffers through an awful divorce from an alimony-hungry "househusband," she learns to stick up for herself, seeks solace in chocolate and tries not to obsess about her cellulite. Over pinot grigio and chocolate cupcakes, she and her Grrl Genius friends-all wealthy powerhouse Hollywood women-commiserate over their divorces, love lives or lack thereof and fluctuating self-esteem. The average hardworking middle-class woman may not take kindly to this level of self-indulgence. But still, Cathryn's goofy, over-the-top spirit is infectious, and by the time she ends up with the kindly dreamboat William McCall-after much uncertainty over his sexual orientation-readers will heave a sigh of relief for her good fortune. Throughout the narrative, Grrl Genius facts and tips in sidebar-style boxes and charts (e.g., the drawbacks to being beautiful; a cross-cultural comparison of divorce customs; a "Male Sexual Preference Determinator System") provide witty interludes in the narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, funny, a wonderful read, December 28, 2004
This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Sex (with Other People): A Self-Help Novel (Hardcover)
A grreat reading experience! The story will keep you up late, turning the pages to see what will happen next. The writing will have you laughing so hard you'll be drawing stares from anyone within earshot. And the "self-help" aspect of this, the world's first self-help novel, will fascinate you.

Author Michon is a genius, a grrl genius, who wrote the hysterical "Grrl Genius Guide to Life." Her new book isn't really about sex at all, it is about love, and hope, and a woman combating some rather unique issues as she attempts to put her life together. Along the way, she explores the separate paths of her fellow grrl geniuses, each one who faces the challenge of changing their lives for the better.

There's a reason why comic genius Carl Reiner loved this book--it's pure pleasure from the opening line to the last sentence. I was amazed by The Grrl Genius Guide to Sex (With Other People)!

This review is from: The Grrl Genius Guide to Sex (with Other People): A Self-Help Novel (Hardcover)
Now that my marriage has blown up in my face and I'm contemplating whether or not I should just give men a miss for the rest of my life and wondering if woman can live by toy drawer alone, I've been going through self-help relationship books like pints of Ben & Jerry. Every one has seemed like the wrong fit--if women are from Venus I must be from Neptune or something. Most of the books just alienate me. This one fits and is full of heartfelt good advice along with an at turns hilarious and touching fictional autobiography. As I was reading I was laughing out loud and nodding my head saying, "Hell yes!" One of the best parts of the book is "The Grrl Genius 'A Four-Year-Old Has Better Rules than The Rules' Comparison Table, where her niece blows The Rules out of the water. And how can you not love a book celebrating the central importance of chocolate and good lingerie? Now I'm wondering how many other women out there have watched Backdraft with the sound off? I thought I was the only one. This book puts you in a place where your eyes open, and you see exactly what you have been doing wrong in your relationships, and it doesn't tell you how to change your taste in men it simply changes your taste in men, like a magic trick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year!, February 18, 2005
On Valentine's Day this is what I did: I bought this book. I thought I would carry it around and feel ironic and then some guy would notice me reading a book with the word "sex" in the title and then he would ask me out and we would fly on his private jet to Paris. I'm still waiting for that guy to call but in the meantime I read Michon's book and I wound up staying awake half the night. This is the tender tale of five women, the members of a chapter of the "Grrl Genius" club, who work through problems of divorce, death, love, and life, with dog custody and trying to "trap" a man into proposing and gourmet food and chocolate and fun facts about animal love. I was so, so, sorry when I finished this lovely, funny, wonderful book... and I wound up reading it again the next weekend. It's fantastic, a great read, and I recommend it to everyone who likes a fun book!
