Biography

Bishop Allen builds upon the extraordinary first years of their career with Grrr..., which Dead Oceans released March 10, 2009. The band fronted by Justin Rice and Christian Rudder is best known for making and self-releasing an EP each month for an entire year, then reworking some of the best songs for a highly acclaimed label debut (The Broken String). The rigorous EP project, and the extensive… Read more in Amazon's Bishop Allen Store

Editorial Reviews

After five years of comparisons to Jonathan Richman, The Kinks, Bright Eyes, and Spoon in rave reviews from Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and others, Bishop Allen has developed an artistry and sound unmistakably their own on "Grrr". The lyrics, praised for their "poetic insight" in the LA Times, have a universality that resonates with listeners of all ages and earned champions ranging from the young comic actor Michael Cera to NPR host Scott Simon. The band appeared in the Sony Pictures romantic comedy "Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist", and on the soundtrack alongside indie luminaries Vampire Weekend, Band Of Horses, and Modest Mouse.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, fun stuff., June 5, 2009

This review is from: Grrr... (MP3 Download)
I don't really like writing reviews for things. Because, really, I'm not some word genius or anything. I'll go ahead and say, I'd never heard of these guys before the sale on this album (It is $5 at the time of this writing). I decided to give it a sample and loved it enough to purchase it. It's a really fun CD overall. Nothing too super dark about any of their songs. It has a great care-free vibe to it. Catchy lyrics and riffs are abound. They use a really cool instrumentation a lot of the time too. Utilizing xylophones/bells/etc... I highly recommend it.

Bishop Allen back again with more catchy pop music... these guys are great. Summer is here! Grab this one (especially now while it's $5!) and check out their other stuff too (like The Broken String). This is music that will make you happy.

Favorite tracks for me might be (1) Dimmer, (5) Oklahoma, (7) True or False, (10) Don't Hide Away... but really the whole album is good.

Bishop Allen are immediately likable; just solid, happy music -- you won't be disappointed.
