Book Description

February 1994
If every observed emerald is green, and if this supports the conclusion "All emeralds are green", does it equally support the conclusion "All emeralds are grue" - where "grue" is defined as green before a certain date and blue thereafter? Since its publication in 1955, Nelson Goodman's "Paradox", the new riddle of induction, has emerged as one of the most stimulating philosophical problems of the 20th century. It has exercised some of the best minds of our generation, and drawn a surprising variety of approaches, ranging from artificial intelligence to Bayesianism. This volume contains 14 essays on the grue paradox, seven of them previously published, and seven written specially for this volume. The work includes a detailed history and exposition, and an annotated bibliography of virtually all the literature on the problem to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything About Grue, January 21, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This volume publishes the best of earlier articles on the topic, with updates by the authors; and half of the volume consists of new papers on the topic by the best minds working on inductive logic. Half of the volume is a mammoth, detailed annotated bibliography on the new riddle--no other bibliography exists in philosophy that is so extensive and provides such startingly in depth summaries of the entries. It is a first. This is the standard volume on the topic: the first and the best. All work henceforth on the topic has to go through the compendium. Goodman himself thought it a mammoth work testifying to the scope and breadth, if not depth, of his new riddle. Ignore it at your own peril. It is the true companion volume to Goodman's classic, short book, Fact, Fiction and Forecast.
