Dragons of Wayward Crescent
When Lucy Pennykettle suspects there's a monster in her bedroom, her mum knows exactly what to do. She makes a guard dragon -- Gruffen -- to look after Lucy. But soon Gruffen realises there's a mystery behind the monster...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Lucy is a typical nine-year-old, and her mother, Liz, is a sculptor best known for her quirky ceramic dragons. Their household appears to be an average one, but when they are alone, something magical happens: their dragons come to life. They all have special abilities, and Lucy and Liz call upon their talents when they need help. Liz creates Gruffen to protect Lucy after she sees a "monster" in her bedroom. Unfortunately, he is young and inexperienced, and causes quite a commotion in the process of dealing with the mysterious entity. He is not short on heart, though, and is determined to find a solution that makes everyone happy and safe—even the "monster." Aimed at younger readers than the audience for D'Lacey's "Last Dragon Chronicles" (Scholastic), this is a cozy and safe tale with bits of humor sprinkled throughout. Line drawings add visual interest; their cartoon style also enforces the light, upbeat mood. This is not a story for readers who are looking for adventure and excitement, but it will satisfy those who want a taste of dragon lore.—Amy Holland, Hamlin Public Library, NY

More About the Author

Bestselling author Chris d'Lacey was born in Malta. He has published more than 20 books, including nine novels. His books have been widely translated and his first children's novel, Fly, Cherokee, Fly, was highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. Other titles include The Salt Pirates of Skegness, A Break in the Chain, and From E to You. Writing was not d'Lacey's first career choice. "I never had plans to be a writer," he says. "When I was in my teenage years my dream was to be a famous songwriter. It wasn't until my early thirties that I tried my hand at any sort of fiction. I kicked off with a gentle 'Christmassy' story that grew, alarmingly, into a 250,000 word adult saga about polar bears. I realized then I had the writing bug. "After he wrote his first story, he waited seven years to write another. "Then a friend told me about a competition to write a story for young children," states d'Lacey. "I wasn't going to have a go at first--until I found out the first prize was £2,000. So I started scribbling, fast!" The story, entitled A Hole at the Pole, didn't win the award, but he sent it to a publisher and they accepted it. The Fire Within is the magical story about mysterious hand-crafted clay dragons that have unusual powers. d'Lacey's inspiration was a craft shop that sold clay dragons. He fell in love with the dragons, but he didn't have enough money to buy one, so the owner pointed him to a section of the store reserved for dragons that have been chipped. "They were a bit cheaper than the other dragons but no less beautiful," says d'Lacey. "And it was there that I saw the most appealing creature in the whole shop. He had a slight chink out of one foot and his 'topknot' was missing (a 'topknot' is on the top of a dragon's head and looks a bit like a shark's fin) but I bought him in an instant." d'Lacey felt that he needed a magical name, so he called him Gadzooks. Chris alternates writing with full-time employment at Leicester University. He lives in Leicester with his wife, Jay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gruffen's Tale, October 21, 2009
This is a cute introduction to the dragons of Chris D'Lacey's The Last Dragon Chronicles. The book takes place before The Last Dragon Chronicles first book, The Fire Within, and features Liz Pennykettle and her young daughter Lucy. Lucy is afraid there is a monster in her bedroom, and her mother soothes her fears by making a special guard dragon named Gruffen. Like all the Pennykettle dragons, this dragon comes to life, but only for Lucy, her mother, or when no one is watching. As for Gruffen, he does his job well, keeping Lucy safe.

I am a fan of The Last Dragon Chronicles, so revisiting the characters before the series started is thrilling. Even if you haven't read The Last Dragon Chronicles, you can read this new series about the dragons. I thought it was adorable and a good start for young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 'Dragons' book for the younger reading set..., June 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is perfect for my 8 year old son. He had tremendous advances in his reading this year (thank you Mrs. Christopher, his most excellent second grade teacher!!) and one of the series he was interested in was Chris D'Lacey's Last Dragon series. That series is a LITTLE tough for him--he started reading them with my husband but is able to read on his own as well.

This series is a nice 'prequel' series and is aimed at a little younger readers. Consequently, my son picked up this one and took off--great characters in a familiar story/world but ones he could do completely independantly. He is still enjoying the more advanced series, but this one gives him a little easier break and allows him to increase his confidence.

Most importantly of course, the story is great and well written...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Chris D'Lacey's THE DRAGONS OF WAYWARD CRESCENT: GRUFFEN provides a vivid fantasy from the author of 'The Last Dragon Chronicles'. This one tells of Lucy, who suspects there's a monster in her bedroom. A new dragon is born - Gruffen - but can he solve the mystery of the monster and rescue Lucy? Another excellent tale.
