Gruffen's Tale,
This review is from: The Dragons of Wayward Crescent: Gruffen (Hardcover)
This is a cute introduction to the dragons of Chris D'Lacey's The Last Dragon Chronicles. The book takes place before The Last Dragon Chronicles first book, The Fire Within, and features Liz Pennykettle and her young daughter Lucy. Lucy is afraid there is a monster in her bedroom, and her mother soothes her fears by making a special guard dragon named Gruffen. Like all the Pennykettle dragons, this dragon comes to life, but only for Lucy, her mother, or when no one is watching. As for Gruffen, he does his job well, keeping Lucy safe.
I am a fan of The Last Dragon Chronicles, so revisiting the characters before the series started is thrilling. Even if you haven't read The Last Dragon Chronicles, you can read this new series about the dragons. I thought it was adorable and a good start for young readers.

This is perfect for my 8 year old son. He had tremendous advances in his reading this year (thank you Mrs. Christopher, his most excellent second grade teacher!!) and one of the series he was interested in was Chris D'Lacey's Last Dragon series. That series is a LITTLE tough for him--he started reading them with my husband but is able to read on his own as well.
This series is a nice 'prequel' series and is aimed at a little younger readers. Consequently, my son picked up this one and took off--great characters in a familiar story/world but ones he could do completely independantly. He is still enjoying the more advanced series, but this one gives him a little easier break and allows him to increase his confidence. Most importantly of course, the story is great and well written...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED JTG The Books (from Chris D'Lacey's website) The Dragons of Wayward Cresecent 1. Gruffen 2. Gauge (The Dragons Of Wayward Crescent) 3. Glade (Dragons of Wayward Crescent) 4. Grabber (Dragons of Wayward Crescent) The Last Dragon Chronicles 1. The Fire Within 2. Icefire (Last Dragon Chronicles) 3. Fire Star (Last Dragon Chronicles) 4. The Fire Eternal (Last Dragon Chronicles) 5. Dark Fire (Last Dragon Chronicles) 6. Rain and Fire (Last Dragon Chronicles)

Chris D'Lacey's THE DRAGONS OF WAYWARD CRESCENT: GRUFFEN provides a vivid fantasy from the author of 'The Last Dragon Chronicles'. This one tells of Lucy, who suspects there's a monster in her bedroom. A new dragon is born - Gruffen - but can he solve the mystery of the monster and rescue Lucy? Another excellent tale.

As a young person who has read all 5 of the David Rain series from Ice Fire to Dark Fire it was a fun change to read about Gruffen. This is a must book for young children to read. It tells of the magic that is behind the Dragons of Wayward Crescent. Then as the child grows into a teen it will be a natural transition into the "Fire" series and David Rain.
