We look forward to seeing our resident groundhog each spring so I thought this ebook might be fun to read. The story flows nicely with a bit of good natured humor and colorful, page-filled graphics. I like that the author uses rhyme, a rhyme that seems natural and unforced. I thoroughly enjoyed this cute little story, and I think young readers will enjoy it also.

I got this book for my 3.5 year-old grandson because I thought it was a such a unique idea for a book. Groundhog Day has always been a little forgotten -- perhaps even misunderstood tradition, and to celebrate the concept of Groundhog Day in a good and fun way seemed like a great idea for a story.

The illustrations are beautiful and really captivated the attention of my grandson. The story is written in rhyme and the rhyme actually flows. The story had a great cadence that keeps my grandson interested for the entire book and I don't mind reading it to him again and again.

Grumpy groundhog tells the story of a groundhog that does not want to get out on groundhog day, despite the large crowd outside. It is sold in rhyme. In the audience children provide ideas for how to get the groundhog out of its den. They range from giving it the newspaper, breakfast in bed, giving it slippers and sunglasses. The illustrations are done such that it is evident that the people are really hoping for spring (frosty landscapes, etc). There is also diversity within the audience. For instance, people wear glasses, are of different cultures, etc. Once the groundhog finally comes out in slippers, robes and sunglasses, the children play for the day and the groundhog goes to bed until spring comes early.

I believe this is appropriate for ages 6 and up. It is a bit long. The illustrations are fantastic-you can really feel how cold the characters are, and that they want spring to come. There is also some unsual vocabulary such as 'knobby' and 'bouquet'.

While the book rhymes, it is not too repetitive. It was a fun, fantasy way to discuss groundhog day, and I would have given it a 5, if it was a bit shorter.

I brought this book to read to my son's first grade class on Groundhog Day. They enjoyed it, and it stimulated a brief discussion about the holiday. My son, at least, said it went very well. I admit I read it a couple of times on my own too. Cute story.

This has been a perfect addition to our shelves! I hadn't come across a book about Groundhog Day before, so it has filled a much needed space. It doesn't hurt that it's incredibly cute!

Groundhog doesn't want to leave his cozy bed, despite the pleading from the mayor and the people outside his little home. Can they finally convince him to come outside?

"The mayor dropped to his knobby knees
and begged the groundhog, 'Come out, please.'
'I won't come out!' the groundhog said.
'I'm staying in here until I am fed.'"

This is a perfect, cute read for Groundhog Day!!

The townspeople gathered ‘round the mayor as he put his fingers to his lips and looked at Groundhog’s door. Knock, knock! No, Groundhog wasn’t planning on getting up and in fact had posted a “Do not Disturb” sign on his door. “Grrrumph!!!! Snortttt!! Hummbug!” No doubt, that grumpy old groundhog wasn’t planning on getting up. The television cameras were set up and people were holding signs. It was Groundhog day and time for Groundhog to get up. The mayor begged and pleaded for him to get out from under his puffy quilt, but no, Groundhog wasn’t planning on getting up.

Groundhog was some grumpy and declared “I won’t come out. I’m closing my eyes and staying in bed.” It was February 2nd and no groundhogs did that. “’I have an idea!’ said a boy in the crowd. / He stepped to the front and spoke up loud. / ‘Give him a paper to read in bed!’ / ‘That’s it!’ said the mayor, nodding his head.” Groundhog checked out the paper as he nestled in his bed, but no, Groundhog wasn’t planning on getting up. The townspeople tried shouting, the mayor begged, they fed him in bed, but nothing seemed to work. Would they be able to get that grumpy Groundhog out of bed for his very special day?

This is a fun, humorous story about a grumpy groundhog young children will love. Of course Groundhog would rather hibernate and little ones will giggle at all the antics everyone tries to get grumpy out of bed. This story in rhyme moves right along and is a perfect medium for the expressive reader to present on Groundhog Day during circle or storytime. The artwork is vibrant, busy, colorful, and very kid-friendly. My favorite scene is when Groundhog is nestled in his bed in his “Home Sweet Home” reading an article in the paper of how he wouldn’t come out. Fun, funny, and a sure to please tale for little ones.

This book has wonderful illustrations which the children enjoyed and the story held their interest as well as mine. I have been to see
Phil on Groundhog's Day and this book depicts the suspense as well as the delight as they wait for their beloved Phil to emerge and see or not see his shadow. What a clever idea to entice Phil out of his burrow when he is having such a wonderful winter's nap. Loved this book.

"Groundhog Day (Pennsylvania German: Grundsaudaag, Murmeltiertag) is a day celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks." Wiki

Do you look forward to the end of winter, to the snowy, icy, cold weather? Then, you will be very happy when February 2 rolls around, it is on this day when the Groundhog is supposed to come out of his cave and let us know whether spring is coming soon. But, what if the Groundhog refuses to come out of his cave? What to do?

The author, Maureen Wright, has given us a delightful story of the day the Groundhog refused to get out of his bed. This is the story of the townspeople and how they coped. She writes the story in rhyme, which all children and parents love. What do you think you would do? The illustrations by Amanda Haley are simply glorious, large, vivid, colorful illustrations of the mayor, the people and the Groundhog. Parents and children will have such fun discussing the Groundhog and his antics.

This is a large, colorful, book that will be attractive to both parents and children. The story is inventive and fun, and so topical after the cold, snowy winter we have had.

The story of the Grumpy Groundhog is a humorous rhyming tale meant for young children, giving an amusing narrative about the reasons why the groundhog wishes to remain in bed despite the efforts of the townspeople to coax him out. This book is well illustrated and is just the right length for the young children it is designed for. It also provides an opportunity for parents to explain Groundhog Day to their children, making this both fun and educational.

This is a great story, whether you read it to little ones or give it to slightly older children to read themselves. The story is written in rhyme and is thoroughly entertaining. Each page is beautifully illustrated with fun, colorful images. The book is sturdy, and each page is thick enough not to tear when little fingers turn the pages.
