From the Back Cover

The growth of drag racing from the late 1950s through the 1980s was nothing short of spectacular, and Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins was there through all of it. He was instrumental in the sport, from his technical contributions (on the track and in the rulebook) to his prowess under the hood and behind the wheel. Grumpy’s Toys follows Jenkins’ career through the cars he developed. This fascinating introspective showcases the innovation and record-setting performances of the many competition vehicles he worked on, including his long line of personal cars. The stories behind all of Grumpy’s legendary Toys are here, but so are the tales and truths about the many other cars, teams, and drivers Jenkins has worked with (and against) in his five decades as one of the premier engine masters in drag racing’s history. Author Doug Boyce has invested countless hours in researching Jenkins’ career, and spent time with the man himself to verify all the information he acquired. It’s all collected and archived here between the covers of Grumpy’s Toys.

Grumpys Toys takes an unprecedented look at the career of Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and the 17 Chevrolets that bear the unforgettable name. The Grumps initial claim to fame would be his tune up service that would lead to a partnership with Dave Strickler in 1961 that lasted through 1964. All of Dave's Old Reliable cars are discussed here with supporting tales from Bill himself and photos from the collection of the Strickler family. The book takes you through the Dodge Boys cars, the break up of Strickler and Jenkins and also looks at the Black Arrow Plymouth that followed. The Black Arrow would bring Bill his first NHRA Championship, his only non Chevrolet national event win. Read how Bill had hoped to obtain a Chrysler deal of his own and why the attempt failed. The Black Arrow controversy is finally put to rest with the help of reclusive Doc Burgess. The Chevy II's, the factory supplied Camaro's, Vega's and Monza's are all discussed in proceeding chapters.
The book does get into factory ties and Bill's relationship with the likes of Vince Piggins, Paul Prior and Ron Sperry. Chevrolets supply of cars and parts would start in 1966 when Vince Piggins came knocking on the door.
National events are covered through out with an appendix dedicated to Grumpys Toys national event wins and runner ups along with a complete list of winning customer cars that were prepared by Jenkins Competition.
Contributors included the likes of Jere Stahl, Mike Strickler, Bud Faubel, Pete Preston, Doc Burgess, Bruce Tucker, Pete Hutchinson, Derrick Von Bargen, Ed Quay, Ken Dondero, Steve Johns, Joe Lepone Jr, Darwin Doll, John Jadauga etc, etc. Bill was on board from the get go and tales of his "trip" help fill the pages.

If you love chevrolet you must be a Jenkins Fan.

This book by Doug Boyce is absolutely fantastic. It brings out the lite side of Bill Jenkins which is only seen by the spectator or racer as "dry' at best. Bill has a sense of humor and Doug let's us see that as he writes.

The book tells you things that you would not realize or abserve when seeing Bill at the track whether is is in the past year or 40 years ago.
He does keep to himself and is exceptionally knowledgeable, but his development for General Motors has and will continue to help all the "Bow Tie" fans.
Bill is a person that knows what is going on and is not stuck on himself as some might be that have accomplished what he has in his life time.

I wish I had the opportunity to have met him at some point in my racing career, but other than a nod I was not that fortunate.

This book is long overdue! I have know Bill for over 40 years. He is my hero and an icon. He is not as "grumpy" as his nickname states. Doug has done his homework to create this book. I hope that all who have purchased this book feel the same way as I do. Great gift!

Having known Bill for over 35 years I was very glad to purchase this book. One of my greatest memories of The Grump was witnessing his win over Ronnie Sox at the 1970 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California. Watching history being made was one thing but to be able to see it over again in print, all I can say is "Thank you Doug Boyce".
