Product Description

The Gryphon is a mythical creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. This superb foliage begonia combines the same majestic beauty with strength and durability.

This begonia can be an indoor plant or a shade plant outdoors. Although the main attraction is the striking foliage, it does produce copper-colored flower spikes. Plants are more tolerant of stressful conditions than Rex begonias.

Saw a gryphon begonia at the local nursery. The only one they had was large and expensive. When I saw seeds, I thought that would be a great way to go. The seeds arrived quickly. I was surprised by how tiny they were and did some on-line research about growing begonia from seed. Turned out to be a bit more work than I'd expected. Ended up buying a seed starter box--a lidded, plastic box filled with growing medium, and a small florescent tube fixture for a grow light. Seeds were just laid on top of moist medium and they have to be kept in a warm environment with good light about six inches above the starter box, so they are in my furnace room under the grow light. (I attached the grow light to the top of a small cardboard box, about 8" deep, turned upside down with three sides cut out so it stands like a table over the starter box. I put an extra piece of cardboard in the top of the box and screwed the small light fixture through the cardboard). Teeny tiny little leaves have appeared! So exciting! So the seeds were real cheap and I've invested $15 in the light and $8 on the seed starter box, and looks like I'll have a bunch of little gryphons to share by Christmas time.
