4.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Ford GT40 Photo Archive, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Gt40 Photo Archive (Paperback)
This book was published by Iconografix in 1997. They printed a very extensive collection of Photo Archive books at a reasonable price. Expecting high grade glossy paper? Not for the retail price of $29.95 when the book was printed. I am one of the the 2 authors, we only received $1000 each to do this book, with no royalties for quantities sold. Just a flat fee. Iconografix then printed the book, to their own specification, in their own horizontal format all photo style, with the book being almost all photos, mostly all vintage photos of Ford GT40s and the Ford international racing program that spawned the car. The authors could not specify the grade of paper used, Iconografix used the same paper that their printer always uses. And, for any detractor to say they expected alot of text, well, the title of this book is "Ford GT40 Photo Archive" That means the book is mostly photos. This book was one of Iconografix's top sellers at the time it was released, and for a while after, as stated by Iconografix in a letter to me. The function of the book is mostly visual. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest GT40 historians, Ronnie Spain, can see photos like these and tell by the small parts, vents, equipment and such, which car it was, which serial number, and usually the time frame. These vintage photos are an asset to GT40 restorers and enthusiasts, as most of the photos showed the cars back when they were in the thick of international racing long ago. I can also tell you that the photos cost thousands of dollars to amass, and we did want the GT40 enthusiasts out there to have access to these photos. A good reference photo book for Ford GT40 enthusiasts. Do remember the old addage: "One picture is worth a thousand words"

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, September 12, 2001
By
Christopher Shannon (Fribourg Switzerland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gt40 Photo Archive (Paperback)
When this book arrived I was expecting a well produced book with lot's of hard to find photo's and a informative text, in this I was very disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the photo's are indeed special, but considering the cost of this book, the quality to which they have been reproduced is nothing more than appalling! The text is minimal, contending only of caption's. I would have given this book another 2 stars if only the publisher's had used a better grade of paper! I do not expect for all books to be created in the high gloss finsh that is so popular at the moment, only to make say that when you are advertising a book as a "Photo Archive" then it makes sence (at least for me) to try and reproduce the photo's in the highest quality possible.

To summarize this book is full of interesting photo's of the GT 40, but be warned the quality is not up to the standard most people would think reasonable.
