Guacamelee! Gold Edition is an amazing combination of platformer and fighter, set in a magical Mexican inspired world. Players control Juan Aquacate, a lowly agave farmer transformed into superhuman luchador, battling through the lands of living and dead to rescue his true love. Guacamelee! builds upon the classic open-world Metroid-vania style of games by adding a deceivingly deep combat system, a dimension switching mechanic that dynamically changes the level, and co-operative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. Gorgeous graphics, tiny chickens, and rooster uppercuts await.

[The ps3 and PC version are virtually the same, and I played through the ps3 version recently, so I'll be reviewing that version here. But the Gold Edition has all the extra goodies the ps3 version got later on.]

There is no other game that I've played this year that's won me over as much as Guacamelee has. Whereas most people will be saying that Bioshock Infinite or The Last of Us is their choice for Game of the Year, my vote goes for this little beauty right here. No, I'm not joking. Guacamelee does so much right and gave me so much fun in just the right amount of time that it's impossible for me to say anything else this year has given me as much enjoyment. I guess I'm just a sucker for great PSN titles, as last year Tokyo Jungle beat out everything else I played, and just a few years before, PixelJunk Shooter did the same. Old school and newer gamers alike should try this game out if they're looking for a challenge or just all around good platforming action fun. And hey, the creators even managed to sneak in a couple of huge game references too, including Metroids, Mario, Castle Crashers, Journey, Grim Fandango and more! No seriously, there are practically legit Metroids and Chozo statues here!

Juan is a regular man who's in love with the president's daughter, Juanita. Sadly, things go horribly wrong when Juanita is whisked away by Calaca, a skeleton in a sombrero, who also kills off Juan. Things aren't over yet though! Juan awakens in the world of the dead, and is given a magical luchador mask by a masked woman, Tostada (yeah, I know). With it, he's able to return to the land of the living and begins his journey to rescue Juanita and stop Calaca from going through with his grand scheme of starting a new world order.

Guacamelee Gold Edition is a great game considering its gameplay and value.

Its main hero is Juan, a simple farmer who was killed while trying to rescue El Presidente's daughter from Carlos Calaca, ruler of the dead world. He will be resurrected by a mystical mask that will transform him into a powerful luchador and with his new hero powers he will go for a quest to rescue her.

The game roots are traditional Mexican culture and folklore, in same time introducing funny and unique characters. Guacamelee is open-world Metroidvania game type but it adds great combat feature and cooperative multiplayer on same screen that is an excellent add-on. The result is game that has both good things from platformers and combat games.

The only drawback is that the game probably will not last long enough for you, it didn't for me as well, but its gameplay, great design and modding possibilities will encourage you to keep playing on and on.

The people who love platformers will like it most but all other players should try to too because Guacamelee has something appealing to all players regardless of whether it is in terms of its humor (e.g. your chicken transformation ability), great design or fabulous combat.

I played it also on PS3 but with the PC extra content this version is most enjoyable way to help Juan to save his love.

4.0 out of 5 stars very original December 7, 2013

I really like it. it is very original! The only problem is that it doesnt support online multiplayer mode. I was able to install configure my ps3 remote to my pc and play this game. just using the keyboard is not good enough for some quest. also the game can get difficult so ask some one to play with you, one on keyboard and the other with a remote controller.

see their website support for details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and Agave Farming. September 29, 2013

Guacamelee!... A harmony of two dimensional combat and platforming, and exploration, to a lesser degree.

This is a style of game like Super Metroid, wherein new abilities acquired steadily throughout allow the player to access paths that are initially blocked. Said abilities are useful in both movement and combat. Like a punch that propels the player quickly forward, used to thump butts OR reach difficult areas.

Many a pop culture reference can be found, along with chuckle-worthy dialog throughout the three to five-hour campaign. Hidden or optional areas not necessary to "beat" the game provide the greatest challenge in terms of combat and/or platforming.

All in all a good time. Five stars, relative to it being an indie download type of game. Olé!

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably Impossible Without A Controller March 27, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download
OK, first off you need to have a game controller for this game. It requires split second button clicks at times and there's virtually no way you're going to have the dexterity to use a keyboard unless you have three hands. The game is a rather serious, if amusing, platformer. It's not the hardest game I've played and it's not a jerk about it, but it is quite difficult and often unforgiving; however, it usually gives you enough check points to not be too mean. I think it only accepts x-input games so you need a 360 or compatible controller.

Short version, you're killed, come back, and have to fight a guy in a funny hat who somehow turned Satan into a chicken and is now trying to merge the world of the dead with the living for...reasons. Just go with it, it works better than it sounds. You start off with few moves and have to go break these statues which a guy who has turned into a goat will invariably berate you for. After you destroy them, you get the new power. The system works pretty well and has a nice curve to show you how using each power can be used to solve various puzzles.

I had a lot of fun playing the game, even if it was a little short. If you're stuck on it, just keep trying, I'm living proof that it can be finished, at least on normal, so just keep at it. One thing to consider when you face a seemingly impossible boss fight, of which there are only maybe four, the bosses all use a very standard pattern so you just play until you figure it out. The end boss for example, very tricky until you figure out when to roll away, when to jump away, and make use of the significant lead time his moves give you to make the decision. Even his final form isn't all that hard once you get the hang of it, though it'll probably take you quite a few tries to figure him out.

Overall, yeah it was a pretty good game and I had fun playing it. Will I ever go back and play it again now that I've finished it once, probably not.
