I had to..., June 16, 2006
This review is from: Guapapasea (Dig) (Audio CD)
I usually don't write reviews but it was shame to see that this CD only had 1 review. It freakin' rocks! It's a nice mix of brazilian music, afro-cuban music, guitar, jazz... I don't know what else but it's very mellow and funky. I can play this CD from the first song to the last one with no problem. I don't really understand most of what he says but i think it adds to the music because the language and voice itself is an instrument.
It sounds like what you would get if you injected Jack Johnson with brazilian culture and sprinkled it with afro-cuban rythyms, shake up a little more, add more funk, and voila! Gecko Turner. I think he is a very talented individual, the music is awesome and great to chill to. I guarantee it will put you in a good mood. I'll definately look out for more of his stuff in the future. Listening to it puts you some place far, far away. One of my favorites...

One of the funnest albums of the year, June 2, 2006
This review is from: Guapapasea (Dig) (Audio CD)
I took a chance in purchasing this album - I'd only heard one track on NPR a few weeks ago. It had a great, understated head-bopping groove that stayed with me. I like world music when it isn't over-produced or over-synthesized, and the track I heard (Limon En La Cabeza) had just the right feel.
I just got done listening to the whole album, and I was really impressed - score! Every track has that same understated groove. It has a popular, hip sound, but doesn't go over the top or veer into Ricky Martin territory.
Gecko Turner has a great voice and delivery, and each song seamlessly incorporates 70's funk guitars, reggae beats, bebop horns, toe-tapping percussion and an overall attitude that gets your body movin'.
If you're looking for some fun music that won't rot your teeth but keeps your booty shakin', and keeps you engaged with its inventive sound, do yourself a favor and get this album!

The coolest dude in Spain, December 27, 2007
This review is from: Guapapasea (Dig) (Audio CD)
I first heard Gecko Turner on the Ritmo Latino podcast. I bought the album and could not stop listening. He combines the jazz, blues, various latin rhythms, and his own brand of coolness. He looks a bit like a young Donovan, and you can detect the influence of Donovan's psychedelic period in some songs. This is the best album I have heard in years. Buy it!

One of best from 2006, December 23, 2006
This review is from: Guapapasea (Dig) (Audio CD)
Every now and then you hear something that just catches you and takes you awa. This disc hits you like a familiar yet different sound that just pleases through and through.Beginning with the Bob Dylan classic "Subterranean Homesick Blues" Gecko Turner gives the song a different beat by using reggae and Spanish vocals splicing it up with a flute throughout the song. This is world music at it's best. The jazz guitar introduction on "Sabes Quien Te Quiere" mixes well with the catchy voacals. If I could compare Gecko Turner to anyone it might be Manu Chao but it much more subdued and just different. It is a nice mix of reggae, samba, blues, jazz and rock. The reggae influences throughout the disc are fun and playful. Case in point, "Te Estas Equivocando"("You are making a mistake") and you would be making a mistake to pass on this disc. Not all of the songs are in Spanish , just check out "How Come You Do Me Like" where Gecko sings in English and sounds very comfortable. There are other songs in English too.The whole disc is outstanding and shows the artists multiple talents as his voice carries different personas where you wonder if it is the same guy. The production values are outstanding. My absolute fave on this disc is the Bob Marley tune "Rainbow Country." It is one of those songs that makes you happy and when I play it in my car I set the replay.I can never hear it just once. Try the sample , you will want to hear it again. If you have yet to hear Gecko Turner check him out because he is a new international star on the cusp of greatness. Buy this now for pure pleasure.

Easy On You Like a Breeze, Funky Enough to Make You Dance, November 19, 2006
This review is from: Guapapasea (Dig) (Audio CD)
"Guapapasea!--word combination of Guapa Pasea, Walk Beautiful, that refers to young African women who are brought to Europe and pay their "fare" by becoming prostitutes--may just be the possessor of some of the best grooves you will hear this year. Published in the rest of the world during '05, Gecko Turner's debut is finally released in the States and, if talent and sensuous rhythms have anything to do with someone's prominence, it should become a staple in the collection od anyone claiming to be cool.
Gecko hails from Spain, a Manchego man to be specific, and he follows the path blazed by Manu Chao--for those looking for musical comparisons--in blending serious messages with infectious rhythms and dead-on arrangements. Whether nodding to Brazil's Bossa and Batucada, vowing to Reggae or floating, Mr along in Jazzy waves reminiscent of early Al Jarreau, Mr. Turner takes for a gorgeous ride in Saturday night heaven.
I'm sorry but the man's that good and, believe me, I'm not one for falling in love easily with new artists. From his Spanish-sung tropical version of Dylan's of "Subterranean Homesick Blues," to his Flamenco-tinged rendition of Marley's "Rainbow Country" or his nod to Thelonious Monk in "Monka Mongas" with a touch of Tito Puente's to boot, Gecko rocks!
By the way, I haven't even mentioned the best tunes yet. For that, you must listen to "Sabes Quien Te Quiere?," "Dime Quien Te Quea, "Dizzie," or $45,000 (Guapa Pasea)." Any of these could be worth shelling the mere $10.99 Amazon is asking for.
Gecko Turner is just aasy on you like a breeze, and funky enough to make you dance.
