Produced by Jay Haley and Madeleine Richeport-Haley 50 minutes
In this videotape Jay Haley presents a practical model for brief therapy that formulates problems so they are solvable. He takes the viewer step by step through this case which he "live supervised." The emphasis is on a variety of ways to plan therapy, some of them unusual, and specific techniques to use. The focus here is brief, active, and family oriented.
This video shows how to give a directive of a special kind. It is illustrate with a case of bulimia/anorexia. The young woman suffered the problem since she was young, while going through a variety of types of treatment. The husband is included in this therapy of a supposedly individual problem. He is not being blamed but given the opportunity to help his wife. In this approach the husband is part of any directive given to his wife. A special directive was given to this couple. They were told that if they did what the therapist said they would be guaranteed a cure. However, they would not be told how the cure would take place until they promised to follow the special directive, whatever it might be. The steps to persuade them are shown. The focus of the film is not on this particular directive used to cure the problem, which some people might not approve of, but the emphasis is on a therapist's instruction for giving this type of directive.
Jay Haley has been with the Mental Research Institute, the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, the Family Therapy Institute of Washington DC and a professor at various universities. He has written 19 books on therapy, including Strategies of Psychotherapy, The Power Tactics of Jesus Christ, Uncommon Therapy, Leaving Home, Learning and Teaching Therapy and several films including Milton H.
