5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely modern Portuguese ballads
A beautiful, melodic set of modern Portuguese fados. Vocalist Moura takes a much softer approach to the music than the traditional, keening style popularized by Amalia Rodrigues and her generation of fadistas. She's no less passionate, however, and this is quite a lovely album... Recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sadly 'samey'
I bought this album after hearing one delicious, seductive track on the radio. Unfortunately there is a dreadful sameness to many of the tracks, with only a couple of very twee folky pieces for variety. I suggest you hear it all before you purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars just listen to a few tracks!, October 1, 2005

There's not a bad track here. And though Ana Moura is strictly classified as a fado musician, there's quite a range here, from the mournful ballads (e.g. tracks 4) to some upbeat and danceable tracks (e.g. track 5). The common thread is a singer with a remarkably controlled voice (compared to other singers, if not fadistas) and beautiful guitar melodies.

Not sure how to articulate this, but you can always identify sincerity in a voice, a real connection to the music- the lead guitar hitting the notes just hard enough, vocalist singing just loud enough, etc. I hear that here.

I've often heard it said that Portuguese is the most beautiful languages in the world, and I'd have to agree. And while I've always been hesitant to learn Portuguese because I was afraid that the lyrics wouldn't hold up, the liner notes include the English language translations to these traditional fados... you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Moura, March 1, 2006

Portuguese Fado has an irresitble mingling of passion and loss. We are told that it has waned in popularity and its great artists have become relics. Just listen to this fine young woman trace a sampling of its styles, its flavors on this remarkable CD, and you'll hope for it to stay - as it sounds - forever.

Ana Moura sings wonderfully - and with a passion that fits the beauty of the Portuguese lyrics. I am right now listening to "Sou do fado, sou fadista" - one of my favorite songs on any album - and no matter how many times I come back to this recording, it always moves me. This is music that is beautifully arranged, and performed with great feeling.

Ana is a very passionate artist. I had the opportunity to see her in concert in Ihla Terceira in the Azors and she was worth every single minute of it.
Nice voice, nice presentation, very down to earth girl.
I was so moved by her songs that I was compeled to get her CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ballad style music with a nice voice for those of us who do not speak portaguese, September 2, 2008

Amazon has a fairly lame world music selection and for those of us who enjoy new experiences and long ago left corporate american offerings in the music industry, it can be difficult to find stimulating work. This is one of them. I enjoy both the style of the music and the international connection with this collection.
