Book Description

September 1, 2006
These remarkable stories of answered prayers remind us that we are never alone

In this inspiring collection, the work of angels takes many forms, including miracles, healings, and heavenly visitations. These events all convey a single, urgent, and loving message: God answers prayer. “There’s real power in prayer,” writes beloved New York Times best-selling author Joan Wester Anderson. “We can trust that God’s intense love for us will carry us through.” Help is at hand when we need it most.
Anderson’s astonishing first-hand accounts testify to the hope that prayer offers: a dying infant inexplicably recovers after an encounter with a mysterious visitor; a long-lost son suddenly returns home for Christmas; a young man drowning in an icy river unaccountably finds himself on shore; a grieving widow, alone and far from home, receives comfort and counsel from angels in disguise. These stories and dozens of others reveal the care of a loving God who touches the most intimate parts of our hearts.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This collection of stories about amazing things that happened when people prayed is the most recent addition to Anderson's series of popular books about angels, miracles and other wonders. Some of the accounts in Guardian Angels were previously published in Angels We Have Heard on High, but Anderson has added new ones. The most fascinating—and goose-bump producing—involve incidents in which people in distress receive comfort or aid from figures who later mysteriously disappear or entire buildings that seem to vanish after an angelic encounter. In one story, a woman gets through a difficult night in the hospital nursing her sick baby because her younger sister comes to help her. Later, when she thanks her, the sister is puzzled because she wasn't at the hospital that night. Anderson's stories are related through the eyes of faith, and she has written them to convey a message about prayer and its importance in today's world. She also urges readers to make prayer a more significant part of their lives. Believers in the power of prayer and angelic visitations who delight in reading "evidence" of the supernatural will especially enjoy this book. (Sept.)

Book Description

Beloved best-selling author Joan Wester Anderson breaks new ground in her latest collection of moving accounts of miracles, healings, and angelic visitations. These stories carry a profoundly important message: God answers prayer. “There’s real power in prayer,” Anderson writes. “We’re not exactly sure how it works, but we can trust that God’s intense love for us will carry us through.”
Anderson has collected astonishing first-hand accounts of the power of prayer: a dying infant inexplicably recovers after an encounter with a mysterious visitor; a long-lost son suddenly returns home for Christmas; a young man drowning in an icy river unaccountably finds himself on shore; a grieving widow, alone and far from home, receives comfort and counsel from angels in disguise. These stories and dozens of others show ordinary people taking their needs to God. All of them received what they needed from a loving God who responded to their deepest needs.
Writing with her signature charm and warmth, Joan Wester Anderson recounts stories that will deepen her readers’ spiritual lives. They demonstrate, with convincing simplicity, that prayer is the key to a relationship with a loving God.

More About the Author

I started writing when we bought a handyman-special house that didn't come with a handyman. We had four sons at that point (a daughter finally arrived a year after we moved) so I started magazine freelance-writing. Collected a lot of rejection slips but I also learned a lot about the industry. I was completely self-taught and have never taken a journalism course.

By lurches and mistakes, I added a second income to the family while staying at home. A friend and I, on a lark, did a book on household humor together, and we found a publisher right away. The first book led to a second, but then my co-writer went off to a real job at a university. I continued at home with the magazine articles, an occasional book (the books never sold very well) and a speaking sideline that got me out of the house occasionally.

In 1992, as I made plans to finish my career in writing, I did one last book, Where Angels Walk, which became a New York Times best seller, and is still on bookshelves and published in at least 18 languages lo! these past almost-20 years. I never did stop writing, and have just completed #8 in my angel/miracles series. I also have returned to my roots---with a humorous book on family life, Moms Go Where Angels Fear to Tread.

I'm very grateful to God for allowing me to do this kind of work. My father once said that a person who loves her job will never work a day in her life, and that is me. I hope you are a new reader. Please check my website (and many new angel stories) at http://joanwanderson.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Inspirational, January 29, 2007
This review is from: Guardian Angels: True Stories of Answered Prayers (Paperback)
I had read "Where Wonders Prevail" by Joan Wester Anderson a couple of years ago and loved it. So, I was very excited to see this new book by Anderson, "Guardian Angels: True Stories of Answered Prayers" at the library. I wasn't disappointed. "Guardian Angels" shares the same format, offering examples of divine intervention in people's lives - mysterious Good Samaritans who appear out of nowhere in a person's hour of need or extraordinary circumstances that simply cannot be explained in human terms.

If you don't believe in angels, you should read this book. It will convince you that there are other beings who walk through life with us and help guide our way. If you already believe in angels, "Guardian Angels" will only serve to reinforce that belief. It is filled with wonderful, touching stories, quite a few of which made me tear up. It is such a reinforcement of the good in the world. We all need that now and then.

I love to read the short, true stories of other persons' positive experiences when they ask God to help them with their challenges in life. I read one story a night before going to bed, and end the day on a positive note. At about $10 a book with free shipping from Amazon, they made super gifts for my friends at Christmas.

Joan Webster Anderson never disappoints! I began reading her angel stories years ago and they always inspired and uplifted me. These stories are short enough to read one a night before bedtime, as a calming and inspiring practice.
I bought this book to give as a gift to a young friend who wanted to believe in spiritual beings, but just did not have enough "evidence."
As she read the stories, they made a profound impact on her and she began to feel angelic presence. What a gift! I think this book would make a marvelous gift for anyone who needs a lift over the troubles of our current world.
