Book Description

Name your terms of surrender.

As a lieutenant to a ruthless vampire prince, Eva is used to difficult jobs. This mission seems pretty straightforward: enter a conquered territory, relocate the survivors and destroy their base of operations. But what she discovers when she arrives in the remote Northwoods Territory challenges all her expectations. Instead of nest of rogues, she finds a unique race of vampires who live out of time and by their own rules. She never counted on feeling sympathy for their cause--or a forbidden attraction to their reluctant leader, Wat. Can she save Wat and his people without betraying her oath to her prince?

Wat is prepared to die rather than submit to relocation. He doesn't trust Eva-she's the epitome of everything he distrusts about city vamps, and she seems hand-picked to tempt him. Somehow he has to keep her close, charm her and convince her to change the terms of the treaty--all without surrendering to temptation, or worse, revealing the secrets of his people.

Crafting an uneasy alliance, Eva and Wat try to find a solution to an impossible problem, contending all the while with princes and gods, ghosts and politics, and most difficult of all, the call of their own unruly hearts…

Author's note:

Guardian by Blood is a freestanding book as well as the start of a new series. However, the roots of this book are found in Damned by Blood, the final book in my Faustin Brothers trilogy. Guardian by Blood refers to events in Damned by Blood and features cameos from some of its characters. I do not believe it is necessary to read Damned by Blood first to enjoy this story, but some readers may prefer to do so.

Product warning:

Avoid this book if you just want more of the same ol' vampires--or if you have a morbid fear of snow--or if you disapprove of big, soft spoken men and sex hot enough to bring on the spring thaw early. In all seriousness, though, there are hunting scenes in this book. Some of the vamps in this story feed on animals, so a boar and two rabbits meet their demise onstage. I thought I'd mention that for folks who would like to avoid such depictions.

I read and then re-read Byrne's Faustin brothers series so I was intrigued to see a spinoff book and wondered where Byrne would take the story from there. Wat and Eva may be my favorite couple of the world built by Byrne so far.

Eva works as "the Hand" (like a combination of law enforcement, an assassin, and a diplomat etc) for Alya Adad and has been sent to Northern Minnesota to subdue what she believes are backwards vamps who feed on animals. Eva's job - get them to agree to move to the Twin Cities and start living like normal vamps by feeding on people. She discovers a complex and mystical community and falls in love with Wat, who I think is the manliest of the vampires Byrne has written. As a Minnesotan myself, I say thank you Byrne for making Wat so ruggedly hot and yet sweet at the same time. Wat is committed to preserving the way of life of his community and while seeking a solution to the impasse he falls in love with Eva as well. The scenes between Wat and Eva are multifaceted and Byrne allows the emotions and sexual tension to develop slowly between them, making their story very compelling. I prefer Bryne's approach, which is more real and ultimately sexier, to those books where there's some kind of instant mate connection that has the couple falling into bed before they learn each other's last names.

There were a few typos here and there, but on the whole they didn't detract much because the story was otherwise well written. I also commend Byrne for having Wat and his community take the position that vampires hunting to feed on humans is similar to rape because the humans don't consent and wouldn't agree if they were told what the vamp intended. It is interesting as well to see Adad and Faustin reappear in this book to be viewed through a very different lens than the one turned on them in their own book.

Overall, highly recommended.

What happened to the editor? One moment you're reading about a particular character and then the next minute the name was changed to someone else who wasn't even part of the story. Confusing. Wasn't a favorite of mine. I don't know. I don't think I will get the next book.

More About the Author

Many author biographies claim that the author has been writing stories since she could first wrap her fingers around a crayon. Not me. If I picked up a crayon, I drew a picture with it. My background is in art, but now I'm drawing with words and I've never been happier. I live and work in Los Angeles. When I'm not writing fiction, I write non-fiction under a different name.
