Best season, I think!,
By AmericaninTurin (Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Guardian: The Second Season (DVD)
Season 1 was all about Nick trying to reach out for his dad, and achieving nothing. Except, maybe, at the very end (last minute or so) when Burton finally goes to Nick's place and tries and explains why the firm is now called the way it's called (don't want to spoil the fun to anyone who still has to watch it) and Nick making a very emotional phone call to his father's answering machine.
Season 2 is all about Nick and Burton making attempts to get closer. It starts right from the very first scene of episode 1, and it reaches some highs in a few episodes (The Dark, just to mention one). If you liked this show when it was aired, this DVD set is definitely a must-have.

So if you didn't watch this show when it originally aired and are a lover of drama, emotional depth and a love that can never be--THIS IS THE DRAMA FOR YOU. The show is framed around Nick Fallin (Simon Baker) a seemingly emotionally disconnected corporate lawyer who struggles with alcohol & drug addiction (this is mainly covered in Season 1) who was caught and sentenced to 1500 hours community service at a Free legal clinic in Pittsburgh. Nick balances his successful professional career while trying to tackle these hours and emotionally charged cases. Wendy Monitz is Lulu, Nick's out-of-reach love interest, Dabney Cole is Nick's father and law firm partner.
Simon Baker does an amazing job, continuing from Season 1. Season 1 ends climatically and Season 2 gets off to a great start. Each episode is emotionally gripping and challenges your perceptions about stereotypes: homeless, helpless, mentally disabled, privileged and everything in between. And each installment presents two cases, one at Nick's corporate law firm and a case at the free clinic, sometimes these cases overlap (illegal in many situations) and the characters, as well as the viewers are challenged with the moral right and wrong. Season 1 started slow and picked up the last third, Season 2 grips you from the beginning. As someone who watched the series when while it aired, Season 2 leaves you hanging and Season 3 (final season) started off strong and as hard hitting as the previous season, but fell apart towards the end.

Brilliant series, stunningly shot, fascinating stories-without the boring scientific stuff so many shows have, this is real human skill and judgement, but mostly it is about the relationship between a father and his son-really a universal human issue.
