Best season, I think!,
By AmericaninTurin (Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Guardian: The Second Season (DVD)
Season 1 was all about Nick trying to reach out for his dad, and achieving nothing. Except, maybe, at the very end (last minute or so) when Burton finally goes to Nick's place and tries and explains why the firm is now called the way it's called (don't want to spoil the fun to anyone who still has to watch it) and Nick making a very emotional phone call to his father's answering machine.
Season 2 is all about Nick and Burton making attempts to get closer. It starts right from the very first scene of episode 1, and it reaches some highs in a few episodes (The Dark, just to mention one). If you liked this show when it was aired, this DVD set is definitely a must-have.

So if you didn't watch this show when it originally aired and are a lover of drama, emotional depth and a love that can never be--THIS IS THE DRAMA FOR YOU. The show is framed around Nick Fallin (Simon Baker) a seemingly emotionally disconnected corporate lawyer who struggles with alcohol & drug addiction (this is mainly covered in Season 1) who was caught and sentenced to 1500 hours community service at a Free legal clinic in Pittsburgh. Nick balances his successful professional career while trying to tackle these hours and emotionally charged cases. Wendy Monitz is Lulu, Nick's out-of-reach love interest, Dabney Cole is Nick's father and law firm partner.
Simon Baker does an amazing job, continuing from Season 1. Season 1 ends climatically and Season 2 gets off to a great start. Each episode is emotionally gripping and challenges your perceptions about stereotypes: homeless, helpless, mentally disabled, privileged and everything in between. And each installment presents two cases, one at Nick's corporate law firm and a case at the free clinic, sometimes these cases overlap (illegal in many situations) and the characters, as well as the viewers are challenged with the moral right and wrong. Season 1 started slow and picked up the last third, Season 2 grips you from the beginning. As someone who watched the series when while it aired, Season 2 leaves you hanging and Season 3 (final season) started off strong and as hard hitting as the previous season, but fell apart towards the end.

Brilliant series, stunningly shot, fascinating stories-without the boring scientific stuff so many shows have, this is real human skill and judgement, but mostly it is about the relationship between a father and his son-really a universal human issue.

Even better than the first season,

This was a great second season for a legal / social services series. Simon Baker is as good as in Mentalist.
I had not watched this on television and I was delighted to find this new series. It tells about an attorney Nick Fallin who has to do community service in a legal aid office to help social service and kids in need. He also helps other people in financial trouble while doing his daily business with mergers and acquisitions. This second season starts with Nick being in trouble because of his past drug probation sentencing. He had to be careful not be sentenced and going to jail. Luckily, his father is helping him and he avoids jailtime. He continues working in his firm with his father Fallin & Fallin and also at the legal services helping kids in need. He is still in love with Lulu his coworker.

If you are hooked on the show, this is a must-have part of the series. I have the entire series and I wish it had gone 10 more seasons. Just can't get enough of the excellent acting and poignant development of the characters through their flaws and interactions with one another and through the plot. Great writing.
Wish this show had been on 10 more seasons!!

I love this show, though much "darker" than Simon Baker's new show the Mentalist.
They should have never taken it off the air.

This was a very good series however it was somewhat like a soap opera in that parts of an episode carry over into the next. Unfortunately, I did not see the original run on tv but saw the reruns and the station showing them got a few of the episodes out of order. Consequently, I bought the DVD to get the series in the order that makes sense. It has an interesting plot and very good acting even though Simon Baker really does not care too much for the series.

I will never get over CBS taking this show off the air, it was one of the best. Now all you see on television are low budget reality shows, the networks dont have to pay any actors decent wages for REAL acting. I miss good television. The only way to decent entertainment these days is to rent/stream the real shows from the 90s.
The people involved in this television series should be very proud of the excellent job they did in casting, writing and producing this quality series. What I would do to see a show as good as this one on television again.

Simon Baker is presented as flawed in this series, but it doesn't put him off as an actor. If you like him, you will be entertained by this series.
