The Generac Guardian 10,000-watt home standby generator is one of the most affordable automatic standby generators on the market today. Featuring a newly designed alternator that can start a three-ton air conditioner with power to spare, this generator will give you the backup power you need when the grid goes down.
For added convenience, the generator arrives at your doorstep pre-packaged and pre-wired air-cooled. This makes installation easy and, therefore, incredibly affordable for the do-it-yourselfer. For your safety, Guardian standby generators are UL 2200 listed and all transfer switches are UL 1008 listed. (Users should consult with area building codes and regulations before attempting installation.) The generator comes with a pre-wired automatic transfer switch, outdoor connection box and composite mounting pad. The automatic transfer switch automatically switches the source of power from the utility to the generator within seconds of a power outage, and because it's automatic, you never have to flip a switch.
At the heart of the generator is a 530 cc 18 HP Generac OHVI (Overhead Valve Industrial) engine, the only air-cooled engine designed specifically for generators. This engine offers the finest lubrication technology available by providing instantaneous disbursement of lubricant to all engine parts. It also features an automotive style spin-on oil filter for easy maintenance. The generator also has an electronic governor, which maintains steady speed and eliminates voltage drop when loads are applied. This, as well as the automatic voltage regulator, provides a smooth rate of electricity, which is especially important for sensitive electronic devices such as computers. The engine offers one of the longest life expectancies in the industry, with over 3,000 hours of runtime.

Like all Guardian standby generators, the Generac 10LP/8.6NG Guardian home standby generator can operate on clean-burning natural gas or LP gas service. This provides you with unlimited runtime during extended utility power failures and meets all EPA emissions requirements. The engine consumes approximately 1.93 gallons per hour of LP gas, and 156 cubic feet per hour of natural gas.
Maintenance is a breeze, thanks to the generator's convenient design features. A hinged top and removable front panel offers quick and easy access for maintenance and servicing, and a new textured, powder coat paint process provides consistent coverage and better bonding to seams and exposed edges providing, which translates to a durable, long-lasting, tough finish that can withstand the elements. The enclosure also includes key locks for safety and sound-absorbing panels for exterior noise reduction. The generator measures 48-by-24-by-28-1/4 inches (LxWx H) and weighs 375 pounds. The generator is covered by a 2-year limited warranty.

We live out in an unincorporated area where power lines are above ground and there are many trees. We regularly have power outages. We also have downed power lines in storms and sometimes its days before we get power back. This generator is awesome and has paid back for itself in saved hotel bills - we never have to run around to get more fuel for our generator. During a power outage, it automatically fails over to the generator and uses natural gas to power the house. With 10 circuits you can power everything including your stove (we have everything but the washer/dryer and dishwasher). Add a UPS and surge protector for your sensitive equipment like computers and you're good to go.
Caution: In some circumstances you should not use natural gas appliances until the gas company has dismissed gas leaks (e.g. after an earthquake) Cons: Expensive and expensive to install; needs permits; is loud when its running and can disturb neighbors if they're close by (in our case our neighbors and their kids stayed with us during the outage!)

GUARDIAN BAD CHOICE FOR GENERATOR,

7,000 watt Guardian Generator professionally installed! Failed to come on at intervals. Serviceman come and company instructed serviceman to check ground wire to metal. Serviceman scraped paint from metal and reconnected it. Tested it, started OK. Next interval start failed after 3 tries. Called service and have been advised that the next visit they would install next fix. Parts are on order. Trouble light said that the unit overcranked. This unit was purchased for emergency service. Are we being paid to test it. Serviceman stated that Guardian sells millions of these units, and company doesn't care about quality. They fix things as they need to. Another thing, if there is a brownout, you must manually turn off solenoid that connects - disconnects electrical service or the solenoid will burn out. Contacted several area technicians, until found a authorized dealer.

Great product. Easy to install and works just as the instructions said it would. The only thing I would change is the surface mount circuitbreaker box to a recessed box. I'm 99% satisfied.
