5.0 out of 5 stars World's Greatest Newspaper
I've subscribe to the Guardian Weekly for about a year now. It's an amazing piece of work: balanced, yet editorially opinionated; serious at times, yet very funny. The Guardian - and its accompanying Guardian Weekly published for its international readers - is the best thing written in the English language. Great information - when it arrives. Like a London bus some weeks you get no copy some you get two. When you ring to complain (which I have 3 times in the last 6 weeks) they have no record of your previous complaints, they blame the US post, they dont reply to requests to speak to a superior, and they wont credit you an extra copy. Basically taking no responsibility. I've...

5.0 out of 5 stars World's Greatest Newspaper, June 7, 2004

This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
I've subscribe to the Guardian Weekly for about a year now. It's an amazing piece of work: balanced, yet editorially opinionated; serious at times, yet very funny. The Guardian - and its accompanying Guardian Weekly published for its international readers - is the best thing written in the English language. As far as newspapers are concerned, the Guardian is in a league by itself. Those of us from the States have access to some high quality papers such as the NYT, WP, and WSJ. The Guardian, however, exceeds all these three in terms of range of coverage and quality of writing.

Since the daily Guardian is printed in the UK, I don't have easy access to it. Therefore, I read some Guardian articles online. To really get a feel for the paper, international readers can subscribe to the Guardian Weekly. The publishers compile numerous articles from the week and print them in the Weekly. Printed in Britain, Canada, and Australia, the tabloid-sized paper arrives quickly and freshly relevant. Its relevance is bolstered by the fact that so many of the issues and angles covered in the articles aren't often found in the domestic media. US news and international affairs are covered very well.

I learn more about my own country from the Guardian Weekly than I do from CNN, USA Today, and Fox News combined. You'll be glad that you subscribed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An English language weekly international news analysis, April 19, 2005
This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
The Guardian Weekly is a joint project between French Le Monde, US Washington Post, and British The Guardian/The Observer. These newspapers are directed towards the educated middle-class. There is a strong tendency towards analysis, sometimes quite opinionated. That said, I do like The Guardian - when I lived in the UK it was about the only newspaper that was readable. The other main newspapers either belonged to Rupert Murdoch (Times, Sun) or were dry as tinder (Independent, Telegraph). The Guardian write in an educated readable way, and depsite it is a bit left-leaning it is well balanced and concerned with real news, not gossip and sensationalism. It has a strong stance on global issues, and therefore it was obvious that it should be involved in a project like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Worldview and High Quality of Writing, March 21, 2005

This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
The GUARDIAN WEEKLY contains a compilation of some of the best coverage taken from the previous week's daily editions of The GUARDIAN, The OBSERVER, LE MONDE and the WASHINGTON POST. The publication's format remains basically the same as when I first read it as The MANCHESTER GUARDIAN WEEKLY in 1956.

A recent issue contained news articles on a variety of topics from Syria's possible troop withdrawal from Lebanon to an account of a football game between Manchester United and Crystal Palace. The edition also included many news capsules from around the world as well as much comment and analysis on diverse subjects. Two pages were devoted to book reviews.

The quality of writing in the GUARDIAN WEEKLY is consistently high. The bias seems to be slightly to the left. I recommend it mostly because of its interesting worldview and the excellence of its reporting.

2.0 out of 5 stars You'd better be proactive, March 11, 2010

I bought this subscription for my wife. After a long (but acceptable) wait the first issue finally arrived. She loved it. A week later nothing more came. Two and three weeks passed without another copy of the Guardian. I gave a call to the number on the paper and they told me that the subscription was suspended. They had no explanation why, only an apology that it was suspended and they reactivated it while I was on the phone. Then they told me that the subscription would expire in 8 months. When I asked why so soon they said the subscription was marked for 45 weeks but at the same time they could see that it was a year long subscription! Again no explanation could be offered. But this time they had to send it up the food chain before it could be resolved. They didn't even ask for a contact number or email address to let me know when the problem was resolved. I had to ask for that too!

I game them two stars because we love the content of the paper. But you'd better be aggressive in managing your subscription because these guys seem to have their heads up their a@$#s.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best news!, December 2, 2006
This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
I wish every intelligent person in the US would read this newspaper. We devour it, savor it. It gives us news we never hear about in American newspapers. It probably gives fits to conservative right-wingers--all the more reason to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I save every copy, November 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
I just resubscribed after a year. What made me do it was looking back at old copies of the Guardian Weekly which I have saved and bound into an album. The paper is expensive, but I think of it as getting a world history book in weekly installments. There is very little "fluff" and even the old issues make for an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Champion of The Left, January 27, 2005
This review is from: Guardian - Weekly Edition (Magazine)
For anyone who is insecure, right-wing, and only concerned with themselves and the tiny neighbourhoods that surround them, you will have a hard time swallowing the social responisibility, international justice, and political awareness that The Guardian promotes with every issue. Elaborate exposes of human rights atrocities decorate the paper weekly, while profound journalists such as Julian Borger, Gary Younge, and Madeleine Bunting bombard the reader with intricate accounts and opinions on current world affairs. One of the most beautiful aspects of the Guardian Weekly is that it condenses only the most important information on urgent issues into articles, editorials, letters, and reports that allow for a variety of views while omitting unecessary details. The Guardian is ideal for students in search of a credible international news source and provides the American (Washington Post), French (Le Monde), and British (Observer, Guardian) point of view on most issues. While I disagree with the paper's blatantly pro-Palestinian stance, there is such an abundance of information and enlightening articles in every issue that this minor flaw becomes irrelevant. Simply put, only peer-reviewed journals and the French investigative magazine "Le Monde diplomatique" come CLOSE to the depth of The Guardian Weekly, and it truly is one of the best newspapers in the world. Subscribe immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars World News, Entertaining Articles, Valuable Information Source, December 9, 2008
This weekly newspaper has articles not written any where else. It has world news that is also very interesting. It also does cover the main corporate news stories as well. It is from London, England. It does not have that much news about Asia; but of course the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) can provide news for Asia which I also recommend. The Guardian Weekly also has introduced me to new Artists from Music to the Print and other mediums and Theater and Movie reviews. It is delivered with the USPS (print mail.) The online website for the guardian weekly does not have all the articles that the weekly print edition does. They offer a free month (trial) and one can pay quarterly or all at once for various periods of time. I have subscribed to it for years along with the Financial Times (London); both of which cover different news and interesting articles not seen in the North American corporate newspapers or others abroad. They may still offer Le Monde Diplomatique (Paris, France) in English which I subscribe to off and on and it comes with some of the Washington Post Newspaper articles too. I highly recommend these newspapers and the Guardian Weekly especially. One usually has to pay for services and the news is no different if one wants quality writing, articles, reviews, information; the news.
