Editorial Reviews

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY AWESOME MIX VOL. 1 is the collection of songs featured in the film. Music plays a major role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the 1970s songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way. Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, 'One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape (Awesome Mix #1) that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that.'

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector. James Gunn is the director of the film with Kevin Feige, p.g.a., producing. Louis D'Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Nik Korda and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is written by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman.

The James Gunn directed space opera movie based on the most unlikely group of rag-tag anti-heroes also has the most unlikely of soundtracks. From david bowie to the jackson five to blue swede, there's a lot to love about this soundtrack. It even includes the score by Tyler Bates.

The sound quality of the classic music is crisp and clear, and this soundtrack is just plain fun to listen to. The score itself is gorgeous. Easily the best score in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's the most real, authentic, eclectic soundtrack I have heard in my entire life.

Oh yeah!

This might be the best soundtrack ever. And never has a soundtrack been so essential to a movie. The "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" is a major part of the plot of the movie and the music it contains is an awesome mix (hence the name) of 1970's music.

This is a must own for fans of 70's music and fans of Marvel.

There's no doubting that Guardians of the Galaxy is the first truly fun movie you'll see all summer. In a summer where the truly fantastic movies' themes have been the daddy issues and nuclear nightmares of gigantic radioactive dinosaurs, and xenophobia in an planet where humans and apes struggle to coexist, halfway through the summer comes the first film that has been the total escape of the year. Sure, it isn't a perfect movie- there are some issues with pacing, and the villains' dialogue is a tad corny, and some underdeveloped character relationships, but none of that matters when you're having so much fun and reveling in the action, clever dialogue, amazing visuals and in general, the nostalgia that the themes conjure up such as elements of Star Wars, Indiana Jones and even The Avengers. But one thing that is perfect? Its soundtrack. I say without exaggeration that you will walk out with several of its 1970s retro gold tracks in your head. And since I've picked up the soundtrack CD on Friday, I haven't been able to stop listening to it since- it's been on my iPad, my phone, on the way to work during dinner, etc. And I can say that one listen is enough to get this effect going.

Mix tapes play a big part of the film's themes. The protagonist, Peter "Starlord" Quill, has a Walkman he keeps on him as he goes around and steals ancient artifacts from far-off planets- something he's had since he was a kid, and a tape deck on his spaceship. He has his "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" he has had since childhood, and its music, in addition to Tyler Bates' incidental music, is what makes up the heart of the film. And on its own, it's just as great, if maybe even better.

FANTASTIC PURCHASE! (Or, as Groot would say: "I AM GROOT!")

If you loved Guardians of the Galaxy in the theater then this is the album to purchase!

The Deluxe Soundtrack is a two disc set that contains both the soundtrack (aka "Awesome Mix Tape vol 1") as well as Tyler Bates dramatic score. Rather than settle for one album or the other you can own both in one fell swoop for a terrific price.

Disc 1: Awesome Mix Tape Vol 1
I don't need to say anymore. This is the album that most movie-goers are going to be familiar with. Songs like "Hooked on a Feeling", "Spirit in the Sky", and "Cherry Bomb" lit up theaters as part of the trailers and are joined by other great hits like "Come and Get Your Love" and "Escape". It's a great collection of songs from the 70's that proves that Peter Quill's mother had great taste in music. Never before has a soundtrack album been integrated so perfectly into a film!

Disc 2: The Score by Tyler Bates.
Remember "300", "Sucker Punch", and "Watchmen"? That was Tyler Bates. It's a solid score that bounces from dark and brooding to tonally light and comical and back again. Tracks like "Black Tears" bring the Guardians theme to the forefront in a way that makes you wish you were back in the theater again, with a big tub of popcorn watching the crew of the Milano tear it up on the big screen. It's a subtle score in places but I've found that I listen to it as much as the Mix Tape!

My only regret is that this wasn't available as an MP3 album and I had to wait a few extra days to get it in the mail.

Yea I tossed this baby on my wish-list from the theater parking lot. I am buying it now. A truly awesome mix and an essential character from the movie.

Guardians Of The Galaxy was my most anticipated film of 2014 and it's most definitely my favorite movie of 2014 so far. I loved the casting, the directoring, but wow the soundtrack might just be the best part about this film. These songs have an actually precense throughout this film, most these songs are played on Peter Quill aka Star-Lord's Sony Walkman that his mother gave him and it's literally his last connection to the life he had on Earth. I hardly buy soundtracks for films (last one I bought was the soundtrack to Drive) but it would've been criminal to keep myself from owning this amazing soundtrack. I definitely recommend buying it especially after you've seen the film, it adds a whole new layer of emotions when you listen to these songs afterwards. The best part is that these are all old 1970s songs you know and probably already love.

Haven't heard of the 18, but the 12 I've got are here, from Gunn's own website... a Deluxe 2CD package includes theorchestal score, so that might be the 18 you're hearing about... enjoy (p.s. - If you go out and buy a couple of 1970's music compilation CDs, you'll find these for WAY LESS.)

Correct track list order?
I found it on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2015381/soundtrack. Your first song is wrong...don't forget about him waiting to see his mom (I'm not in love).

Steal? No one is stealing anything. This is a reference to the film, nothing more.
