Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is a whole new world of Marvel Comics action and adventure, and one that eventually inspired the latest incarnation of the team ... that will be featured in next summer's movie. That movie, it should be noted, might have more to do with the original Guardians of the Galaxy than we thought."  -- Glenn Walker

"These two collections reflect what made Marvel so fine back in the day. The story of the Guardians unfolded over time slowly and in a meandering way, touching first one port of call then another over the years as we learned more and more about these fascinating characters. They became increasingly woven into the larger fabric that was the sprawling Marvel Universe, but in a manner which seemed natural and less contrived somehow that what we chance upon these days with persistent events dominating the flow of the storytelling." -- Rip Jagger

"To truly get the full Guardians experience, starting with their metaphorical 'season one,' you have to start here. If you're a fan of space opera or classic comic book storytelling, you'll enjoy reading these cosmic adventures from some of the medium's biggest creators." -- Brett White

Format: Paperback
This second volume of the classic adventures of the Guardians of the Galaxy bring them into some pretty high promineance. It starts with an annual where Thor is sent to the future and aids the Guardians against the half-computer Korvac. This leads to "The Korvac Saga," one of the greatest Avengers stories of all time as the Guardians come to the past, meeting the Avengers as they believe Korvac is out to kill the younger version of Vance Astro before he goes into space and founds the Guardians. But Korvac has become the all-powerful Michael who starts a quest for power that has the Avengers and the Guardians going at it in a fantastic and brutal battle. Bonus points for including the epilouge from the "Korvac Saga" collection created in 1991 that caps the tale off.

We then get stories of the Guardians in the present times, meeting with Ms. Marvel; a team-up with Spider-Man, who naturally has some conflicts with these future heroes; a three-part tale from "Marvel Two-In-One" where the Thing aids Starhawk and the team against a threat; and, biggest of all, a story where Vance tries to convince his younger self not to go into space, the Thing and the rest of the team trying to stop him and Vance ends up unlocking an alternate timeline for his younger self (who would eventually become the Avenger Justice). The tales are all well-written in that nice '70's style with great artwork from George Perez on the Avengers tales and good interaction between the Guardians themselves and the Marvel heroes. While some may be annoyed at this being set so much in the present, it's a great showcase for the Guardians and deserves a read by those interested in their adventures that established them as a good team to watch.

This book is another fine example of Marvel's talented writers and artists creating an epic-style story with multiple characters. Where the Avengers are and have always been a great roster of personalities - the Guardians in this volume match them in almost every way - with their powers and personalities.

I didn't read GOTG back during my hey-day of collecting Marvel comics but I do remember them appearing from time to time with other titles that I regularly read (Avengers, Defenders, Fantastic Four) however after getting this book, I now have gotten a better idea of what I missed.

"Guardians of the Galaxy - Tomorrow's Avengers Vol 2" is an enjoyable collection, filled with a fun, interesting group of heroes but more importantly with some fascinating back-story - particularly the Vance Astro character, who bridges both centuries and who wraps up this volume on a somewhat profound note, opening a myriad of possibilities, which of course was so prevalent in Marvel stories.

This collection brings the Guardians from their 31st Century time to the then 20th Century where they join forces with the Avengers - the main plot centers around the "Korvac" storyline; a very well-developed tale involving a futuristic man, tormented and abused by the alien conqueror's the Badoon, who transforms into a near invulnerable, God-like being who travels back to the 20th Century and wants to re-make the universe. The Guardians are convinced that their leader, Astro, is in danger - not his present self but rather his younger self as a boy and that Korvac is tracking him down to destroy him in an attempt to alter the future.

Bought for my son thinking that Rocket Racoon, Groot and the gang would be in the comic book. Not the case this story revolves around the original Guardians. Great Story as well.

Marvel produced a winner and it was the Guardians of the Galaxy back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Starhawk by far was my favorite character and of course Charlie 27, Martinex, Yondu, Nikki and Vance Astro rocked. Thanks for these colorful stories and crossovers with Avengers, Defenders, Fantastic Four characters, etcetera. This one has the storyline of Korvac in full color. Read it, you will like it. Clean cut excitement.
