Book Description

0974518611 978-0974518619 October 2004
Guardians of the Soul: Angels and innocents, mourners and saints—Indiana’s remarkable cemetery sculpture offers rare beauty, poignant emotion, and a renewed connection to our past. With breathtaking images by Hoosier photographer John Bower, and a foreword by Pulitzer Prize-winner Claude Cookman of Indiana University, this timeless book makes a perfect gift or keepsake.

To create this stunning book, Bower and his wife, Lynn, traveled throughout Southern Indiana, thoroughly exploring its cemeteries. The result is over 180 breathtaking, duotone images of glorious, larger-than-life marble angels, as well as charming, folk-art children carved in limestone by local artisans. There are also mourning women, brave soldiers, and adorable animals. Crafted in a variety of styles, materials, and sizes, they all radiate with the love, hope, and faith of the family members who erected them.

The statues Bower has captured are simply extraordinary. As he says in the Introduction, "I see cemeteries as nothing less than outdoor museums. In fact, I will go so far as to say they constitute a national treasure."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"a slow road trip through southern Indiana cemeteries [with] heartwarming stories about some of the people honored by the monuments." -- Indianapolis Star, 01/16/05

From the Publisher

In this special book, the magnificence and poignancy of Indiana’s captivating cemetery statuary—treasures that have virtually gone unnoticed—are revealed, for all to see, in stunning, sepia-toned, black-and-white imagery by acclaimed Hoosier photographer, John Bower. Also included is commentary by Bower describing his project, as well as heartwarming stories about some of the local people the statues were erected to honor. To create his book, Bower and his wife drove 10,000 miles, comprehensively exploring over 200 Southern Indiana cemeteries.

While all the extraordinary photos in Guardians of the Soul were taken in Southern Indiana--the part of the state that is south of U.S. 40, the old National Road, they are representative of the cemetery statuary located throughout America—and they rival statues that can be found in the world's most famous cemeteries. Collectively, these amazing pieces of art represent a significant, yet underappreciated, facet of our collective heritage.

I have always been fascinated with cemetery art, from visits during Memorial Day to photography for both undergrad studies and for personal pleasure. If you share my interest in cemetery art, please do not pass up the opportunity to read and own "Guardians of the Soul".

The financial costs and miles on John Brower's odometer were well worth his efforts in creating such a beautiful masterpiece. Each photo is taken in black and white (which shows off each line and curve in his subjects). My only wish is that he would also list the names of the cities Brower took the photos from, rather than just the counties (I'm a fellow Hoosier, too, but I don't know the county system as well).

Again, please pick up this book. A superb example of not only a great Indian read, but also a wonderful study of how photography taken from cemteries can be awe-inspiring rather than morbid.

John Bower has published several photography books and this is my very favorite. He manages to capture a strong "sense of place" and the selection of photos is really wonderful. This book was a true labor of love on his part, given the distances and time involved.
