ANOTHER ABSORBING CRITIQUE OF "GODS FROM OUTER SPACE" THEORIES, January 6, 2010
Ronald Story is one of the earlier writers who criticized authors such as Erich von Daniken (author of unbelievably popular books such as
Chariots of the Gods and
Gods from Outer Space: Return to the Stars, or Evidence for the Impossible), who suggest that "ancient astronauts" or "gods from outer space" have visited this planet. His earlier book,
The Space-Gods Revealed: A Close Look at the Theories of Erich Von Daniken was an in-depth examination of von Daniken.
Story begins by acknowledging the earlier work of Christian researcher Clifford Wilson (e.g.,
Crash Go the Chariots,
The Chariots Still Crash, and
War Of The Chariots : Wilson & vonDäniken Debate UFO's and Life in Outer Space---which contains a debate between von Daniken and Wilson), "whose pioneering best-seller ... gave me encouragement in my own attempt to set the record straight."
Story writes, "much of von Daniken's broad appeal derives, I think, from his use of the Bible as an authority symbol while at the same time reinterpreting the scriptures to suit his own needs."
He writes, "Contrary to what von Daniken would have us believe ... All sorts of magical rites and primitive religions can still be observed in what are called contemporary 'stone-age' cultures. These modern-day 'primitives' worship some of the same 'gods' and perform similar ceremonies as their ancestors did, thousands of years ago."
Story suggests that "the head of a small comet" caused the massive explosion in Tunguska in 1908, because of "The sudden deceleration in the air would, for one thing, cause the carbon monoxide and methane gas to sublimate, being instantly converted from the frozen to the gaseous state. This alone would result in a tremendous explosive force."
He compares von Daniken's ideas to the "space brothers" concepts of people like Adamski, and concludes, "the imaginary Space Gods of von Daniken are little more than modern replacements for the 'Space Brothers' created by the contactees in the 1950s."
This book is still of interest to those interested in "ancient astronaut" or "alternative history" theories, as well as UFOs.
