Obee, a freelance writer, and Ellis, a whale researcher, have produced a chronological account of whale research covering a 20-year period. Whale study was once limited to captive and dead whales, but scientists discovered that it was possible to observe these animals, once considered too untrackable and dangerous, in the wild. Obee profiles some of the most notable researchers, and Ellis's color photographs illustrate the wonderful diversity of these aquatic mammals. Bruce Obee is a Vancouver Island writer and photographer. The author of several books, his work has appeared in "National Geographic," "anadian Geographic" and "Travel and Leisure," among other publications. He lives on Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsula.
