Gr 6-10--In a straightforward text, Sheehan examines the geographical, political, and cultural forces at work in this Central American nation today. Particular attention is paid to the people of Guatemala--Indians, Ladinos, and minority groups--with an emphasis on their lifestyles, languages, religious beliefs, and traditions and celebrations. One brief chapter covers the history of the country from the Mayan civilization to the present. Sidebars on aspects of dress, the church, archaeological sites, famous individuals, "Ecotourism," etc., provide additional information of interest. A good-quality full-color photograph, reproduction, or map appears on most pages. This solid volume, used in conjunction with Jules Hermes's pictorial and personal Children of Guatemala (Carolrhoda, 1997), will provide students with a well-rounded approach to a country and a people.
