About the Author

Bill Jelen is the principal of MrExcel.com, a leading Excel web site. He provides custom Excel and Access applications for hundreds of clients and is the author of Mr Excel on Excel. He lives in Akron, Ohio.

More About the Author

I spent twelve years 'in the trenches', working as a financial analyst for finance, accounting, marketing and operations departments of a $500 million company. Armed with a half-rate reporting tool and a spreadsheet, I was responsible for turning large amounts of data into analyses for the board room quickly and accurately. Working originally in Lotus 1-2-3 and then Microsoft Excel, I honed techniques to take massive amounts of data and produce meaningful reports in record time. These techniques are spelled out in Guerilla Data Analysis Using Microsoft Excel.

In 1998, I launched MrExcel.com, which is now one of the three most popular Excel websites with 21 million annual page views. Being MrExcel is now my full-time gig. My team has developed custom applications for hundreds of clients around the world. I enjoy entertaining a room full of accountants with my 'Power Excel' seminar.

When I am not Excelling, you can find me and the family under the stars enjoying a movie at one of the many drive-in theaters that still dot northeast Ohio or kayaking on the Mogadore Resevoir.

I was worried that this book would either be (a) over my head or would (b) give me tips that I wouldn't use. What I found was a book with Excel tips that you don't learn in even advanced Excel training, but that are simple to use and can take A LOT of time off your day-to-day Excel tasks! The author gives simple, easy, relevant examples to how to use the tools and tells you the potential pitfalls of using each tool and how to get around them. He addresses such things as Consolidating and Subtotaling with ideas for making your reports more readable.
Highly recommend for anyone using Excel in an office environment. There will be at LEAST 5 tips in this book that will make it well worth your $$.

If you're a marketing manager -- or any kind of manager that has to look at whacked corporate data and within minutes turn it into something that people can understand -- THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. Bill Jelen has been where you and I are today. He's taken years of real-world examples, questions, challenges and solutions and turned them into easy-to-understand "How-to's" that will slice HOURS of tedious trial-and-error off of your analysis project. Not only that, but the book has real-live support on the internet...! This means that if the project is too overhwhelming - you can just outsource it -- I mean delegate it! Thank You Mr Excel!

I read the reviews on this site, and went to buy this book. After bringing it home, I found that it was not what I expected at all. The contents were for much more specialized applications, and didn't appear to apply to the average Excel user. I've used Excel for several years, and haven't had much of a need for many of these specialized tips. I found a few things here and there that may have been helpful, but not enough to justify buying the book.
(What really surprised me is that when I brought it back to the store, the fellow at the counter gave me a funny look, and asked why I was returning it. When I replied that it just wasn't what I expected, he said that I was the third person to return that same book in the last month!)

After a decade-long search I have finally found it-a practical, understandable, superb, and stellar codex which denudes Excel's cryptic power tools. With screen shots and pellucid narrative, and couched in the context of the real world, Jelen deciphers and leads us through the labyrinth of Excel's convoluted power tools.
Finally, I am the master of the data menu. I am using more functions than I had ever imagined I could use.
With bodacious, blistering clarity, Jelen provides the grand-prix exposure of how to USE pivot tables, probably Excel's most potent device. This premier explanation of pivot tables is sine qua non reading for all Excel users. The chapter on pivot tables, if read by enough people, would skyrocket white-collar productivity and spike the government statistics.
This book leaves the tomes in the dust. This is the one. Do not wait. Buy it.

It's a great book that really teaches you what the title promises, in a very concise and easy to understand manner.

The author obviously has a lot of experience using the advanced tools of excel in data analysis. It's a good book for people who know the basic functions of excel inlcuing wiriting basic formula but haven't had the experience of using excel to process large amount of data. I found this book very useful and you can go through the book very quickly and really learn a lot.

Concepts are good and can be used to later versions of Excel but targeted towards 2003 users.

This book is a highlight of my career back then whereby I learnt Bill's tips and gave it a go at my old workplace. It is not the trouble I got into but the trouble I did to learn something new and for life!
