I had the great pleasure of hearing the author give a presentation on this book recently (and the companion book on Guerrillas in Missouri) in St. Louis. There are a lot of positive things about this book, and a few negatives. The positives include a good primer on guerrilla activity in Missouri...a good portion of that activity happened where I live, here in Central MO, so it brings some local history to life and gives me more to read about, which is always good...he manages to stay on the "hunter" aspect of the narrative without getting bogged down in biographies og the guerrillas...the relevant illustrations are very interesting and some undoubtedly rarely seen...a favorite of mine was the cover of a song sheet dedicated to Missouri's guerrilla hunters...his discussion, brief though it is, of competing political interests - esp. among slaveholders, conservative Unionists, and radical Abolitionists, is very interesting, esp. when it impacted raising of troops...his coverage of the Missouri State Militia and the Enrolled Missouri Militia gives well-deserved attention to these men who did some very hard fighting.

The negatives do not detract from the merit of the book, but do mean the book could have been so much more than it is...it appears he only used one or two archive manuscript sources and one wonders if that's because so little exists or if his search was only cursory; that said, he does make good use of published letter collections in other publications...the sourcing is made all the more difficult because there are no footnotes/endnotes and it up to the reader to decipher the sources. He does lapse somewhat into generalities about weapons, uniforms, etc.

For readers like me who love Missouri history, Civil War history, and the history of the Missouri guerrillas, this book is for you. Thanks to the author for wading through the blood and gore to bring us this book.

Anderson and the rest of them were psychopaths, imho. The Civil War was just an excuse for them to be the serial killers, mutilators, etc. they were.

Many interesting details. I won't spoil anything, but I'll just say one thing: I liked the follow-ups, learning what happened later to some of the characters in the story.

It was good. Maybe I was hoping for a little more. While western and northern Missouri were very active, and well covered, the guerrillas in south and southeastern Missouri were also very active. Maybe I was looking for a little more on those areas.

Gives a good overview of the counter-insurgency war in Mo. There are some memoirs of Union soldiers who fought the bush wackers but they are hard to find.
