Editorial Reviews

Inspired by the best-selling books, this charming series follows the adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare and his father, Big Nutbrown Hare, reminding us that there is no greater love than that between a parent and child. In these seven fun-filled episodes, Little Nutbrown Hare goes about exploring the meadow and playing with his friends, all the while learning valuable lessons of friendship such as the importance of being a good friend, sharing with others, embracing differences, keeping promises, taking responsibility, and learning to forgive.

I was recently browsing DVDs for something to appeal to very young children. I had a two year old and a four year old in my care, and I got so sick of some of the programs geared towards kids on my TV stations. Some of our children's programs have become too knowing, too jaded, or simply too snarky for their own good and I longed for something much more old fashioned. And that is exactly how I would describe the Disney Junior series "Guess How Much I Love You." This series is both incredibly sweet and completely innocent. If your child has already been exposed to the ADD generation of cartoons and such, these mini-episodes will feel both calm and unrushed. And while I would hesitate to offer up this programming to more mature children, it comfortably fills the niche for about the ages of 2-7 with its depiction of a loving bunny family.

The series is inspired by Sam Bratney's books of the same name and these animated episodes were created by an Australian production company. There have been two DVD releases thus far. First there was Hidden Treasure, which was released in November, which contains a more wintry setting. And the second release is Friendship Adventures with a more spring-like atmosphere. The stories revolve around the character of Little Nutbrown Hare, his family, and his other forest friends. The DVD is divided into 7 episodes, with an average piece running about 10-12 minutes. Therefore, you can stretch out the stories or play them in one sitting. As sweet as they might be, though, I'd recommend you (as a grown-up) NOT try to sit through a full DVD in one sitting.

Episodes on Hidden Treasure:
1) Hidden Treasure
2) Finder's Keeper
3) It's Okay
4) Slip, Slop, Slide
5) Inside Day
6) Where's Little Redwood Fox?

My girls ages 3 & 5 love this movie but they like the "Hidden Treasures" a little more. All of the 'Guess How Much I love You' are sweet stories which teach a little lesson and the voice of the father, 'big nutbrown hare', is warm, funny and caring.
