Editorial Reviews

Guest of Cindy Sherman takes an eye-opening look at what happens when a skeptical outsider finds himself romantically involved with the ultimate insider. Paul H-O became a fixture of the New York art scene in the 1990s with his public access show Gallery-Beat. Armed with a video camera, he attended art gallery openings, amusing some with his candid, witty assessments of their work, but also winning many fans. Among the latter was Cindy Sherman, the press-shy artist who is internationally acknowledged as one of the world's most gifted and significant visual talents. Cindy invites Paul to her studio for a series of exclusive interviews and through these videotaped encounters, he gains unprecedented insight into her artistic process and a romantic relationship blossoms. Their initial bliss ends when Paul finds himself wracked with anxiety about his own personality becoming subsumed by his role as Cindy's guest at the celebrity-studded openings and dinners she regularly attends. Filmed over 15 years and including interviews with a veritable who's who of the art and entertainment world (including Ingrid Sischy, John Waters, Robert Longo, Carol Kane, David Furnish, Danny DeVito, and Molly Ringwald), the film paints a vivid picture of the New York art scene that is also a witty, illuminating look at celebrity, male anxiety, and art.

5.0 out of 5 stars a terrific ride! June 26, 2011
Format:DVD
If you want a real insiders view of the NYC art scene wrapped in a charming love story than look no further than this very entertaining documentary about Paul H-O.....a producer of a public access cable show on the NYC art scene who falls in love with Cindy Sherman (one of its stars) while filming a series of episodes about her for his show. Luckily for the viewer Paul has always had a video camera in his hands and through the ten years of filming for his cable show he managed to not only document the rise of the art scene, but also the building of his own relationship with Cindy (as well as the ultimate loss of his identity). Paul is the quintessential showman who manages to hold the spot light (and the viewer) from begining to end with his wise ass quips and magnetic personallity. Through it all we watch the art world gain traction, self importance and wealth....... while he experiences the rocky ride of loving one of its stars. A charming and funny film that comes with the extra bonus of getting a first hand view of the evolving NYC art scene through the late 80's and 90's as witnessed by Paul H-O....someone who filmed every moment of it in real time and was clearly not afraid to point out when the emperor was not wearing any clothes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Amazon December 16, 2012

I've been waiting over 2 years for this documentary to be available on Netfilx. On a whim I looked it up on Amazon Prime, and sure enough there it was. Thanks Amazon!
This is a great little documentary about an artist most everyone has an opinion about but whom very little it seems is actually known. But the greater arch of the documentary isn't so much the work of Cindy Sherman or even the story of the man she dated for almost a decade. This is a film about the overvaluation and rockstar status of anointed artists the world over. A good companion piece to this film would be Simon Doonan's recent article in Slate about the "post-skill" movement which is so popular. Sherman is such a great example of this systemic hype surrounding the art world. Which is not to suggest that Sherman herself is not talented, but rather that she lives a charmed life despite having no idea she lives in a bubble.
Great film. If you love art but hate the art world its a must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this! March 2, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
I loved this documentary. Even though it wasn't really about Cindy Sherman but it was about Cindy Sherman made it that much better. Cindy actually ends up looking very good in this film whereas he comes off as sounding like serious sour grapes - totally worth watching, even if just to get a glimpse into the art world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, informative Film August 26, 2013

I loved everything about this film- the humor of the film maker Paul HO, the visuals of the art, the interviews with artists. This film is a must-see for anyone interested in art and anyone interested in Paul's charming, humorous and earnest viewpoint.
