2.0 out of 5 stars Not a guide but an average sampler of 50 species in Mexico, August 12, 2008

This review is from: Guia de campo para las aves de Chipinque (Spanish Edition)
Basics: 1995, softcover, 130 pages, 50 color plates, 50 species, no range maps, Spanish only

Chipinque refers to Parque Ecologico Chipinque located near Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon in Mexico. This book is not a complete field guide, but a guide to just 50 of the birds that can be found in this park. I will even go so far as to say this book is not a field guide. Instead, it is an overview of some of the more common or colorful birds.

While accurate, the information provided is general and basic. It gives the reader average descriptions of the bird along with some other notes on its voice, habitat, distribution, and behavior.

The 50 color illustrations, one per page, are decent but still average when compared to the other guides available. The artist needs a little more practice on capturing the true shape and dimensions of the head, beak, and eyes.

Overall, this is simply an introductory guide to capture the beginning birder's interest and to show off some of the colorful birds of this park.

I've listed several related books below...
1) A Field Guide to Mexican Birds and Adjacent Central America by Peterson/Chalif
2) A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America by Howell/Webb
3) A Field Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Central America by Davis
4) Birds of Mexico by Blake
