5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible breastfeeding resource!, November 8, 2002

This review is from: Guide to Breastfeeding (Paperback)
The definitive guide to breastfeeding that I have looked for and finally found - how incredible for it to also be Canadian! Everything is covered in this book, even blebs which I needed information on personally and could not find in the many other breastfeeding books I own (I am a childbirth educator and doula so I own several). Not only did it have the information I needed, it even had a picture of a bleb and gave me the healing options I needed for this painful condition! This is the first book I recommend to all of my clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, June 15, 2005

This book was an amazing resource that helped me enormously with breastfeeding. If it wasn't for Dr. Newman's book, I wouldn't have lasted the first weeks of breastfeeding. Through comprehensive teachings and examples, it teaches you how to breastfeed easily and without pain, while giving you a glimpse of the marketing that formula companies employ to lure women away from nursing.

It is the one book that is essential for a breastfeeding mother (or mother to be).

5.0 out of 5 stars This book, along with Jack's website, are the best BF resources I've found!, February 11, 2011

This book, along with The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (La Leche League International Book) are my top pics for breast feeding books. I only had LLL's book w/ my first son, and did find it more descriptive than Jacks for how to put Baby to the breast, I thought I had it down pat before my baby arrived. But..... then somehow I still had mega latch issues, and the nurses were telling me I was doing everything right. But, as Jack points out, it's easy/common to be told you're doing everything right when that may not be the case- if you are in pain, you need help to correct the situation, and fast! Thankfully I looked up a local La Leche League leader who spent a couple hours with me in her home showing me how to make his latch more comfortable in just about every position you can think of, and things shaped up after that just fine. So if you need in-person help, I highly recommend looking up a local La Leche League leader!

As far as BF reading material goes, I highly recommend this book. I also found that my hospital did several things I should have objected to with my first son, so hopefully things will go a lot smoother this time around now that I know what to object to.

Be sure to check out Jack's website though!!!!!!! Amazon won't let me link to it, but if you google his name you'll find it. He has videos showing correct and incorrect latches, as well as demonstrating when babies are just sucking vs. when they are actually drinking. I found his videos to be a great help, especially when compared to a written description- it's just easier to see what he's talking about by actually seeing a video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Nursing Moms, January 14, 2011
I wish I had read this book BEFORE my baby was born. It would have saved me much frustration in the early weeks of nursing. Dr. Jack Newman explains many breastfeeding difficulties and gives simple tips on how to overcome them. This book explains to the reader what is normal nursing behaviour in a newborn, and why early supplementation with formula/sugar water is rarely necessary. Dr. Newman also discusses which commonly prescribed medications are safe/not safe while nursing and touches on the unethical marketing of artificial baby milk by the formula companies. I have bought numerous copies of this book to give as gifts for family and friends. Dr. Newman's website is also a wonderful resource if you would like to check out his hints before you commit to purchasing this book.
