Book Description

July 1999
Canoeing the Missouri River is a happily written guide for people who dream of a long trek some day on the exciting and historic Missouri River.

Written as both an active guidebook and an armchair read, Keith Drury makes a river trek come alive through the pages of his own day-by-day journal and in his detailed guidebook advice on the towns, re-supply points, and people along the way who help canoe trekkers. There is plenty of practical advice for the novice in his chapters on equipment and tips and hints, plus he sprinkles throughout the book just a pinch of philosophy -- not so much as to be an overbearing professor, but just enough to get the reader to think.

The tale is also honest in outlining the difficulties of such a trek, and the emotional challenge of the "middle miles malaise."

It is a great read for both the person planning to actually take a Missouri River trek, or for the armchair enthusiasts who enjoy reading trekking literature.

About the Author

Keith Drury was captivated by the outdoor trekking life as an eight-year-old lad when he received a set of Zane Grey novels as a gift from his aunt and devoured the entire set in three months, then began reading the set through a second time before moving on to James Fenimore Cooper and other adventure writers.

At twelve, hiking with his father on a trail in the Delaware Water Gap, he met his first backpacker. When asked, "Where'd you start?" the middle-aged man said, "Wind Gap" some twenty miles away. Impressed that there would be such a long trail, Keith whistled, "This trail goes all the way to Wind Gap?" The older man chuckled, then turned the boy's head westward and said, "See those white markings on the bark of the tree?" Shaking his head he heard the man say, "If you'd keep following them you'd wind up in Georgia." As his eyes widened with the notion of a path continuing for more than a thousand miles, the lanky older man then turned his head the other direction and said, "And that way would lead you all the way to Northern Maine, 2000 miles in all."

Walking back to the car from their day's outing the young lad said to his father, "Someday I'm going to hike the whole thing." His father wisely replied, "You could son . . . you really could . . . if you set your mind to it, that is."

He realized his dream of finishing the Appalachian Trail, along with other dream treks including a Florida-to-Canada bicycle trek and a significant canoe trek from Indianapolis to Mississippi, but even always there was this junior high dream to trek the Missouri River. One day he hoped to travel its entire length.

Husband and the father of two sons, his time was limited for such extensive treks until the boys went away to college and were married, and his summers were free with a faculty position at Indiana Wesleyan University limited to the school year.

In 1999, that little boy wrapped up inside a body in its 50's realized his dream, and the result is a guidebook for others who will likely follow in his footsteps, especially in the first decade of the 2000's when many eyes turn toward the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.

4.0 out of 5 stars I am the author--here's the truth, August 3, 2004
By
Keith Drury (Marion, IN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Guide to Canoeing the Missouri River (Paperback)
I wrote this book while canoeing the river several years ago--there were no guides and, of course, nothing at all with GPS locations in it--regarding re-supply points, getting around the dams, contacts in towns for help etc. If you are canoeing part or all of the river you'll want this--it is printed in a handy pocket sized edition. In fact, if you EVER plan to canoe the river--buy it now, it is self-published and when the first print run of 1000 copies is gone it goes out of print--so far 700 copies have sold. Happy canoeing. I had a riot on my trek-- but it has its moments--one time when the rollers on one of those big lakes were as high as my canoe was long! Enjoy! -- Keith Drury Indiana Wesleyan University keith.drury@indwes.edu

4.0 out of 5 stars Review Guide to Canoeing the Missouri River, July 1, 2006
This review is from: A Guide to Canoeing the Missouri River (Paperback)
A short, quick read. Enjoyed it. I am planning a canoe trip,

as well, however, he had a motor on his canoe, and I won't, so

some information would not be applicable to my situation. Did

find the personal experiences of interest and the information

on the stops he made and the availability of purchasing supplies

helpful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, September 20, 2005
This review is from: A Guide to Canoeing the Missouri River (Paperback)
I know that this was privately published and I'm sure that the author put his heart and soul into the effort, but it just did not meet my expectations, especially considering the price. Perhaps other people will like it more.
