Many vegetable gardening books I've come across seem to assume that you live in the north. Mention is made of those "lucky enough to live in the south" who can garden year round. Here in SC, it can get quite chilly in the winter, yet of course is swelteringly hot and humid each summer. I know certain things will grow over winter, but as a northerner who has lived here for ten years, I still get befuddled.

I am quite pleased with this book and think it's a good investment. This, along with my Clemson Extension vegetable book, has taught me that there is more to gardening in SC than okra, pole beans and tomatoes. (I was excited to learn that Swiss Chard will do well here during the summer, when everything else I read described it as a "cool season vegetable.") I appreciate the recommendation of specific varieties for this climate. The authors also recommend unusual herbs and vegetables to try, and cover fruit trees as well which is interesting.

I have been expanding my container gardening this year, and find this plus "McGee and Stuckey's Bountiful Container" are a great match.

There are a few things lacking...some of the charts are a little difficult to read. (The zone map appears to have originally in color but transferred to black and white, which makes it difficult to read as well). Some of the descriptions are a bit brief, and I find myself wondering about fall planting schedules, which I think could have been covered a little more in depth.

However, I noticed that the two authors have also released "The South Carolina Fruit and Vegetable Book" which, by perusing the "look inside" feature on Amazon, appears to be an expanded version of this book. I may get it instead.

Still, I think this is a valuable addition. Four and a half stars!

I have a dream garden thanks to this great book. Not only does it provide excellent information about growing vegetables, but also for growing fruits. Thanks, Walter Reeves and Felder Rushing, for making my vegetable garden an outstanding success - and this is my very first year of gardening in South Carolina, after living in upstate New York for many years.
