About the Author

Peggie (Wolfington) O'Neill was a native Philadelphian. Growing up in a household full of love, laughter, and affirmation made her the dynamic woman who, throughout her life, touched so many. She and Frank O'Neill were married 54 years, raised six sons, and were blessed with 16 grandchildren. Peg considered her greatest gift and role to be that of wife, mother, and grandmother. It all began in 1965 when she followed the advice of a dear friend to make time for herself to pray every morning. That led to a daily routine Peg called the "Peace Way" that she practiced for 46 years until she died of bladder cancer in September 2011. Juggle Without Struggle is Peg's gift to the world. It is her passionate legacy that she was determined to leave behind for her family, friends, and those she spent 278 Juggle Without Struggle hours with in chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Cindy Moore is an assistant professor of English and director of composition at St. Cloud State University.

Format: Paperback
A Guide to College Writing Assessment examines the history, theory, and practical implementation of writing assessments in college and universities. Though the book is written by scholars and provides a substantial bibliography, it is intended for an administrative audience--primarily writing program administrators. The 8 chapters are as follows:

1) Introduction: Embracing the Power of Assessment
2) Historicizing Writing Assessment
3) Considering Theory
4) Attending to Context
5) Assessing Student Writers: Placement
6) Assessing Student Writers: Proficiency
7) Conducting Writing Program Assessments
8) Evaluating Writing Faculty and Instruction

Overall, this is an excellent guide to the issue of assessment and will be a great help to program administrators thinking about how best to use (or not use) assessment to help structure programs or respond to external (ie. state-level) demands. Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) administrators will, however, likely find it frustratingly quiet on the the specific problems assessment brings to complex pedagogic paradigms like Writing in the Disciplines. The book's prose can often be long-winded, spelling out even very obvious implications, and--at other times--excessively succinct (as in the section on validity and reliability in assessment design).
