Comment: This book has already been loved by someone else. It MIGHT have some wear and tear on the edges, have some markings in it, or be an ex-library book. Over-all it is still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Written as a general guide for people searching out ghost towns in Colorado, this book covers each region of the state where silver or gold was mined. . . . Easy to follow directions and good sketch maps locating all the sites are included. The book contains an overview of what the ghost town tourist can expect to find at each site, and the writing is an engaging blend of history, anecdote, and legend, the result of much research.”

If there's a better book on the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado, I don't know about it. Eberhart's book is massive (almost 500 pages), detailed, and informative. It covers all the mountainous regions of the state where gold was mined by sections; all the towns/camps in each section are listed and described (many in great detail), and fairly precise sketch maps locating all the sites are included. The book also contains many excellent photographs. This is the 4th edition, last updated in 1969; a new edition would be worth considering since much of what is described as being visible to the visitor at many sites may no longer be there (thanks to fires, severe weather, vandalism, etc.); a lot can change in 35 years. But in terms of locating ghost towns and camps and learning what they were all about, this book can't be beat. It's an excellent guide.

You should have this book with you when you drive in the mountains of Colorado to camp or ski. For instance, as you drive through Fairplay and observe the lovely old stone courthouse (now the library), you can learn that in its past, the local yeomanry, outraged at what they considered a ridiculously light sentence for a convicted murderer, hanged him from a second-floor window. Then, as a warning for an upcoming trial, they left a hangman's noose on the sentencing judge's desk. Much later, during renovations, a noose was found under the floorboards, leading to speculation that the judge had hidden the noose as evidence against the lynch mob before he had what was probably the better idea of fleeing the area. Or, you can learn that Buena Vista had a hanging judge, Judge Lynch, and visitors to the town were often greeted by the sight of hanging bodies. This book will make you take detours along bumpy roads to see the remnants of Colorado's colorful past.

iI have a much earlier edition of this book; its nearly worn out, and would not give it up for anything. This is one of the best gudes to old Colorado mining camps and towns that there is. I have study the moining history of Colorado for many years and found this book to be the one I turned to most often. Am I buying this updated edition? You bet you life. It's already ordered and I feel it is well worth the money. GeoDig
