About the Author

D. Charles Van Fulpen, a healthcare communications specialist, is a former journalist and editor of UPDATE, a publication for physicians and medical personnel. After ten years of marketing healthcare information, products and services, she became aware of the growing need and market for consumer healthcare information about small problems that can easily develop into large, expensive problems. For example, how atherosclersosis (cholesterol build-up in arteries) can lead to heart disease. Her research has shown her that minimal changes in individual lifestyle - eating 10 percent less fat, getting a small amount of exercise and curbing stress - can decrease cholesterol, prevent athersosclerosis, and lower the risk for heart disease while increasing one's quality of life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great common sense guide to good health, December 6, 1999
By
Jeff Macauley (Phoenix, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
This easy to read primer is full of solid information that I'm finding very helpful as I adopt a healthier lifestyle. The quizzes were real eye openers and pointed up areas where I needed to pay attention. As follow-up, the author offers manageable ways to improve diet and exercise that are very easy to implement into my daily routine. I haven't tried all the recipes yet, but I really loved the Broiled Orange Roughy. At first I felt a little silly doing some of the stretches at work, but they really make a difference in the way I feel. This is a good common sense book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Thoroughly Enjoyable, July 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
A co-worker of mine recommended this book to me and I'm glad she did, because I found it quite informative and enjoyable. It's very reader-friendly. The text and ideas are easy to follow, they have a real flow. I particularly enjoyed the three case studies. They showed, in a very real way, how stress affects people from all walks of life. The Lifestyle Quiz, too, was a real help. I'm not sure I know of another of its kind. I recommend this book to people who have an interest in changing their lifestyles for the better. This book has a very warm, human approach. It definitely stands out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Information that does NO wrong...., April 21, 2000
This review is from: Guide to Contented Hearts: Cardiac Risk Management : Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure Exercise, Stress, Weight, Diet (Paperback)
Self-Help books are often a dime a dozen, with as many coming at you as there are day in the year. But what is different about Contented Hearts is that it is very readable to someone who is not well versed in self help books. A book that does not bombard you with technical terms but does actually inform you on the subject is a good buy, especially when the information could just prolong your life.
